Our Eldest Child Has Left

We had four days together before her flight taking her away

Four days. It’s not a lot of time to tell Papa’s Princess everything that needed to be said. And to be honest, now that she’s gone. Most of what I wanted to say never got said. But then again, we are both quiet people, the introverts unlike my wife and our other two children.

She came to Mexico with her husband. The usual being a tourist guide aspect of me kicked in as I showed them around our bustling town. A few dinner outings, a few home-cooked meals in our home, and scattered Mexican experiences helped fill the day.

Hiking? None with the exception of the last full day when she was here. Her husband got the “bug” and stayed in his rental unit while the rest of us — her, my wife, and me — went for a ride on an ATV to reach distant beaches. Since the quad couldn’t get to the beaches, there was some walking through the jungle that happened. She loves the jungle and the hiking.

By the time we returned, her husband was feeling better, but not well enough to go out for another culinary experience. Not a problem, we had leftovers with a large side of home-prepared large shrimp for three of us, and dry toast with butter for him.

In the morning, they caught an Uber to Puerto Vallarta and the airport. He was feeling much better, promising a more pleasant flight than if he had still felt ill. We got a message on WhatsApp telling us they are now safe and sound in Canada.

It will be at least two more months before we get to see any of our three children and their families. If we had stayed at home in Canada, the visit likely wouldn’t have happened even though we are only three hours apart by car. There are dogs and jobs for them.

Here in Mexico, we don’t feel alone like we do in our home somewhere on the Canadian prairies.
