Opening My Heart Box

Embracing the folds and creases of my existence

The corrugated creases of my heart box are well-worn. Folding inwards to protect the jagged shrapnel Of pieces people have left behind

This box has bent over backwards To accommodate the preferred contents that people want me to hold The top barely fitting Over its incessant desire to please

Torn cardboard Ripped to expose a vulnerable layer underneath The container nearly discarded In favour of what is stuffed inside

Each crease is a badge of honour A mark of letting someone in Despite the pain, there are no regrets

Imperfect, perforated edges Which can conceal my personality’s gems Or open a listening ear

My heart box sits waiting Until it can open for someone again.
