A chapter of a quest — attack the crocodile

You draw your weapon, pushing all doubts to the back of your mind.
You’ve come this far. You’ll be damned if you don’t slay the foul crocodile, just as you have been tasked to do!
Reaching it might prove easier said than done, however… for the beast is on a rock, some twenty yards from the pier.
You briefly consider swimming, then dismiss the idea. That would put the crocodile at an advantage, and you’re not enough of a noob to make that sort of mistake.
You look to the fisherman again. “Can I borrow a boat?”
He nods silently for a moment, puffing smoke as he looks from you to the nearest rowboat, then to the crocodile, and then back to you.
“I can help you out, kid,” he says at last. “Two silver pieces, and you can have that there rowboat for an hour.”
You frown, but then nod. It’s a pain to have to pay for the hire, but you have little choice — and the trip should still be profitable.
Remove 2 silver pieces from your inventory.Soon you are making your way across the water towards the crocodile. As you get closer, it slides into the water and disappears.
“Damn it.” You look all around, axe in hand, but there is no sign of the creature.
You reach for your backpack, and pull out a day’s rations. You’re not sure, but perhaps the creature would be attracted if you were to throw some of your dried meat?
Optional encounter: Tempting the crocodile.
You choose to throw dried meat as bait.Challenge rating: Easy (roll 10+).
Roll using wits.If you succeed, the croc snaps at the dried meat from your rations, then emerges onto the rock. You now have the choice of fighting with a weapon.
If you fail, you gain no advantage, and must use magic to fight from a distance.Either way, subtract one day's rations from your inventory for each attempt (you can only keep trying if you still have some rations).Before long, there is a swishing noise as something swims under the boat, then rears up ahead of you! You ready yourself, and battle is joined:
Encounter: crocodile.Challenge rating: Easy (roll 10+).
Roll using magic (or you can choose to use brawn, if you successfully tempted the crocodile – see above).If you succeed, you land a hit. This creature is tough – you need to hit it four times to slay it.
If you fail, the croc lands a bite. Subtract 1 from health.If you beat the croc, you are paid 15 silver pieces by Bert Bones. You can then head back to the adventurer’s guild, or go to the inn to heal up.

If you want to flee from this fight, you need to distract the crocodile with some rations. Follow the optional encounter above. If you succeed in tempting the crocodile, you get back to shore safely while it’s distracted. Click here to return to base.
