Only Alone Shall I Meet My True Self

Poetry prompt: Life’s journey

Image by Kelsey Vere from Pixabay

The people you least expect to Step into your life Say they’re here to help What can they do To ease your blues?

Ha! The ones you Thought through bloodlines And family ties Without a why Would hold you up Be kind and wise Don’t save your drowning Leave you frowning — Disbelief As they say ‘Hi’ Then walk on by Causing you grief.

Over these myriad varied years I learned nobody answers prayers Perhaps the gifts were wrapped In layers Too profound to recognize.

Behind the tears My eyes are dry Heart knows Not to question why Those qualities I cannot see — A higher purpose beyond me.

For often I have danced in light Where nobody heard my plight Laughed and sung Life’s thread unspun.

For a brief moment I feel free Compassionate and Filled with peace Let the music never cease.

For I am me Nobody else Only alone Shall I meet my true Self.

I bow out of this attempt to capture the essence of over seventy years of life in one poem and hand the baton to Nina Simone.

Thank you for being here .
