Cosmopolitan is a prominent women’s magazine that has both a traditional print magazine and an online version. A byline from a magazine like Cosmo would be a feather in most writers’ caps.
Nonfiction: Read the magazine and pitch based on what you see. They really like true stories and first-person essays from freelance writers. They are a women’s magazine, so they write about women’s issues such as fashion, beauty, relationships, sex, education, and work.
They have seen it all, so to get noticed, you will not only need a pitch in a category they would actually publish but an interesting twist or angle.

Family Fun is looking for features and columns. A couple of the columns either pay a flat rate of $100.00–200.00, or they will pay $100.00–200.00 if they use the idea but want a staff writer to enter. Overall, they pay $1.25 per word for most columns and features — features can be as long as 3,000 words, so the max payment is $3,750.00.
Nonfiction: For feature articles, they cover various topics related to parenting and family. These topics include parties, food, crafts, family entertainment, holidays, celebrations, games, household cleaning, household projects, decorating, travel, vacations, and family outings.
Columns: The writer’s guidelines are 3 pages long and list 10 different columns they are looking for. These columns are idea of the month, more great ideas, how we have fun, explore, create, kids in the kitchen, let’s party, healthy family, happy home, and favorite things. Maxim is a popular Men’s Magazine. The guidelines do not specify a payment amount but reports online list Maxim as paying up to $2.00 a word.
Nonfiction: They are looking for articles to fit with their magazine categories of fashion, lifestyle, health & fitness, and Dating & Sex. All articles must be unique and be a minimum of 1,500 words. They prefer the articles to be 2,000 words and no longer than 3,500 words.
