One Sure Way to Increase Your Story Readers

Medium wanted you to reach out beyond its members

Recently I join several Medium Writer Facebook Groups. I’m not going to lie. My intention is to reach out to more readers for my articles. So do others there. As a favor, we also read articles from others who shared over there.

I came to notice there’s a way to know the writer is an experienced Medium Writer. They usually share their Medium Story Friend Link. It is a link that allows anybody including non-Medium members to read the article.

The experienced writer knows there are many benefits in doing so.

1 It will definitely reach more readers. The writer is there to writes with the intention to have people reading it, regardless of if one is a Medium member or not. Fair and equal in the writer's eyes. To the writer’s interest getting readers is all that counts, not just Medium’s member reader.

2 It might increase the earning too. While it is true that the writer got paid when the stories are read by Medium members only, the payment will not reduce if it is read by non Medium members. Instead, if the non Medium members join Medium that month, the writer will get paid as well. Besides, if the non Medium member loves the stories, it might get shared to others, and might reach other Medium members.

3 Non paid medium subscribers claps are valuable. Not all medium subscribers are paid, medium members. But many of them do have high number of followers. If they clap for your stories, it will reach greater number of audiences. So when you share your articles among Medium subscribers (e.g. in a Facebook group), do share the friend links instead of the normal links.

4 That’s what Medium wanted us to do. Medium created the Friend Link for the writer to share with a clear intention, which is to share with our close network of the article we wrote and have them read regardless of their membership. The whole idea is to reach out to more non Medium members so that they might consider joining Medium too one day. When more people join Medium, everybody benefits from it.

Just to share the part from my side, below is my best performing article of 305k views. 92% of it is external views.

There are 100 million active monthly users on Medium, but we have many billions of people in the world. Let’s reach out to them, share your stories with them, and help Medium to grow!
