New Members to Medium: Creating Lists of Articles for Future Reference

Medium is a great platform for writers and readers and I’m still new here, so finding my way around. I’ll admit, I’m a fan of folders. And I mean I categorize everything, just like I try to do when organizing my emails (I know it’s pointless, but I try to organize to find things later). It’s why I loved Pinterest when it originally was an idea sharing app. (before all the ads) Folders are also where I save good Instagram posts for later (like art how-to videos).

Lists for sharing

I’ve just discovered that all the articles I’ve been saving in folders(lists) in Medium can also be used as saved lists to share with others!

There is even a place in the list where you may add a note in each article, so if you’re trying to find a thought or quote or whatever it is, there’s a note right there. I love this.

Find your lists

In order to find your lists, click your profile picture in the lower right corner on mobile (Upper right on desktop). It will pull up your Stories or drafts. Look to the right and you’ll see the word Lists. (On desktop your menu will show Library) Click that.

You’ll also notice that Reading List is the default folder and has a lock meaning it’s private to you. You can also decide if your other lists will be private or unlocked- which I believe others can see.

Save to Lists

How do you add articles to lists? Click the little paper symbol when you reach the end of an article and it will suggest Save to reading list. You can also deselect that, and create your own list. This is what I do for various topics, such as Marketing, Writing on Medium, self-improvement, outdoors, etc.

Mention your other articles

I do notice quite a few people will post another related article at the end, to help guide readers to associated content. I don’t have others related to navigation but here’s one I wrote about adjusting to an empty-nest!

I hope this was helpful! Don’t forget to add it to your own list, on organization or navigating Medium.

Of course, once you know how to do this you may not have a need to save it unless you’re creating: a list for people new to Medium!

Thanks for reading!
