One Photo and a Few Words: Three Dories, Kennebunk, Maine

Even at low tide, these iconic boats stand out on the water

After an early morning hour-long drive from Massachusetts, my daughter and I pulled into Kennebunk, Maine. I got a late start and missed capturing this image at sunrise.

Known to locals and visitors as the Three Dories, they languish in the waters of the Kennebunk River past the Dock Square parking lot.

Fortunately (or not), it was low tide when I arrived, so I could climb down on the rocks and get closer to the shoreline to capture the dories up close.

Anchored in the Kennebunk River just past the Dock Square Parking Lot, the three dories are often photographed by visitors and locals alike.

There are fewer than 12,000 full-time residents in Kennebunk, but those numbers swell in spring, summer, and fall.

Kennebunk is home to many tourist sites, including the Bush compound, the former summer home of President George H. W. Bush and his wife, Barbara Bush.

The Goat Island Light Station guards Cape Porpoise Harbor, built in 1833 and one of the last lighthouses to be automated.

Kennebunk is a tourist destination with many visitors starting in the spring and continuing through autumn. There is no shortage of sites to capture images from sunrise to sunset. As are most of the towns near or on the coast of Maine, it’s a photographer’s dream come true.

I recommend beginning your trip with stops in Kittery, Long Sands Beach in York, Nubble Lighthouse, Ogunquit, and Kennebunk.

Oh, if you’re a seafood lover, stop and Bob’s Clam Hut in Kittery. You won’t be sorry.
