A Timely Snowstorm Was Not Going to Keep Me Indoors

I wondered if winter would ever come back

After an earlier day of snow proved to be a disappointment, another storm from Old Man Winter finally gave us a new coat of white to wear. I call it timely because spring is approaching.

It was the region’s largest storm to date, all of five inches.

Still, I wore several layers of clothing to plunge into the early morning cold. It was not the worst storm I’d trudged through, but keeping my camera and lens dry was challenging.

I started at Sholan Farm, a community-owned apple orchard in our fair city. The farm encompasses 169 acres, with 20 acres dedicated to the apple orchard.

Making my way through the snow, I realized traveling across an open field of naked trees with winds howling and sleet and snow, trying to snuff out the warmth of my body, was probably not the best idea. But I’m a bit stubborn and had no plans to back down.

The first image was a no-brainer. With the ground covered in a heavy wet blanket of snow, I found a splash of color. It was almost blinding, standing tall against the haze of swirling frozen pebbles. It was a storage shed — a nearly neon yellow storage shed.

Not far from the shed was a smaller stand of apple trees. My focus point was down the center, with trees on either side helping to lead the viewer down the center. In post-processing, I cropped the top and bottom of the image to give the photo a panoramic look.

I hesitated to include a photo of a bud waiting to sprout in the next six-to-eight weeks but decided to post it. I made this photo with a Canon 85mm macro lens, for which I’m still trying to get a feel. The focus, in my opinion, is a bit off, and I sometimes have trouble with focus bounce. That may not be the proper terminology, so forgive me if it’s wrong. The focus will bounce back and forth, even when set to a single focus point.

I’d be surprised not to find a macro expert here, so I’m open to pointers.

The № 6 Schoolhouse is one of the last one-room schools in Massachusetts. It’s the third iteration of the school. The first two were too small and too close to the road. The current structure, built in 1851, is better insulated than its predecessors. That’s probably a good thing to hold up to New England winters. The school has been used as a community center since 1949.

I’ve always enjoyed the peace of a small stream winding through snow-covered woods. This stream was near a house and may have been on private property, so I decided not to climb down for a closer look.

It was cold, and the snow/rain mix was getting heavier, so I called it a day. But I’ll be back out when the snow calls.
