TAG TEAM STORY (2)

One More Reason that I’m THANKFUL for the List Feature!

What happens to the stories people put in their reading lists?

Have you ever given any thought to what happens to the stories that members put in their reading lists on Medium?

Personally, I never truly thought about it. I guess I just assumed people use the list feature for some of the reasons that I use it.

I LOVE the list feature, and I want to take this time to say THANK YOU to the Medium creators for it.

I mostly always list stories that I’ve already done a thorough job of reading. I keep them because I want to use them in the future, usually to promote or quote from.

I can’t honestly say that I list stories, simply to go back and read, even though that is exactly what many readers apparently do.

This fact just dawned on me — or more like fell on me like a ton of bricks.

Here’s how it happened…

I wrote a story that turned on a light in my head

I just finished writing and publishing a story that managed to turn on a light bulb in my head.

That was why I was immediately inspired to write this related story as well. As a result, the two stories fall into the category of what I call “tag team” stories [Feel free to read all about how they work later]

The first story is called: Don’t Worry Just WRITE!, and in it, I was encouraging those writers who have former stories with low views.

I mentioned how readers typically do more reading, depending on their particular reading times, routines, and agendas.

That helps to explain why they often find their way to older stories long after they’ve been published.

But after hitting the “publish” button on that story, I was scrolling through my Notifications, and suddenly had another thought.

It had to do with the numerous notifications about various stories of mine that some readers were adding to their lists.

That’s when it hit me!

I used to wonder why sometimes many of my older stories would suddenly start showing up in my stats, even though I wasn’t promoting those particular titles.

Has that ever happened to you?

I seem to subconsciously notice it more and more.

Now I understand what’s going on…

We have the list feature to thank

In case you’re a slow thinker like me, and haven’t figured it out, let me spell it out

It’s not simply a matter of readers landing on your Profile page and strolling along, discovering older titles.

That’s what I use to credit all the delayed reading to.

That might be part of it, but I now believe that being able to bookmark stories for later, is a more logical reason for the occasional bursts of attention on stories that we sometimes notice is happening.

So yes, we have the list feature to thank for those days when your older stories start to suddenly become so popular.

  • People hit the bookmark icon to “SAVE” stories to a list that they create.
  • People go search for multiple stories when they have time on their hands to do a lot of reading
  • People find your stories and end up binge-reading

Now do you see what a cool resource tool this little feature can be?

Personally, I have even more appreciation for it now.

Final Thoughts

In harmony with my original story that prompted the writing of this one, I hope you feel encouraged and motivated by this story as well.

If you’re feeling less than happy about your stats on Medium, read story 1, and do like it says:

Keep in mind what you read in this story, and realize that as long as you continue publishing, you’re building a solid foundation and creating your own library of stories.

And just like at the library, readers wander in at their convenience.
