PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE
Once Around the World
Week 169 of the photographic documentary of my daily life
Wow. What a journey it has been. I’m sitting now on my chair looking past blooming rose bushes onto the stunning mountain range in our backyard. This place is certainly prettier than what I expected. And I had high expectations.
Let’s rewind a few days and take you through this week step by step.
Or plane by plane.
Thursday. Still all relaxed. While we should have still been working in Germany from Thursday until Saturday, the weather didn’t play along, so we spent some time at my parents' place.
My mom was screaming in excitement when she stepped into the kitchen and saw this bird sitting in the shrubs. She froze in position and just stared out the window while I grabbed my camera out of my room to snap the tiny beauty.
The European Robin isn’t a rare species, but it has its season when you can see it more often and times when you won’t see it at all. Plus, it’s just a stunning songbird, isn’t it?

Later that day, I went for a walk with David when this eerily hanging leaf in the forest attracted our attention. Clinging onto a thin silk thread, it was turning circles hanging on eye height above the trail.
One of nature’s wonders. Beautiful and magical at the same time.

On Friday, we drove back to Bavaria as we had to empty out our trailer and pack the rest of our belongings before heading overseas.
It was raining on and off and we used the dry gaps to load stuff into our car.

On Saturday, I captured the last sunrise for you. The last sunrise from this location for this year. Next year, we will be back!

And after packing our bags late at night on Saturday, we were off on Sunday afternoon. Not without an adventurous journey of getting to the airport, I could have happily passed on.
It was a relief when we finally sat on the plane, saying goodbye to Germany’s fall colors below. It was raining and cold, and soon we disappeared in the clouds.

My Monday had only 12 hours. The other half of the day got stolen on my journey flying East. From departing Germany on Sunday afternoon to arriving in New Zealand on Tuesday morning, I made a jump through 12 time zones.
From Frankfurt to Doha (Qatar) and then onto our longest flight ever. 16 hours across the Indian Ocean and then the entire Australian continent. Just to have to go even further.

Touchdown was on Tuesday morning, New Zealand time, in Auckland. It was 4 am in the morning, and we were wide awake as we fetched our bags, went through biosecurity, and then rechecked our bags again from the domestic terminal to head further South.
When we took off, I was hoping for a spectacular flight, but just as on our departure in Frankfurt, it was raining and overcast.
Just about an hour into our flight, the clouds began to lift, and slowly but surely, we got glimpses of the peaks of the southern Alps.
And then I was in awe.
The snowcapped mountain peaks stretched far across the land, with spectacular valleys below filled with deep blue waters.
In Queenstown, we touched down between mountain ranges on both sides and a lake underneath. We still had to get our rental car, do some shopping, and drive to our new home.

It’s Tuesday morning, and while we thought we had to work already, they pushed us back to Friday, which we didn’t mind at all.
I’m sitting now on an armchair in our living room overlooking the mountain range in our backyard and watching birds dance by our patio doors.
Yes, this is prettier than anticipated. Yes, there are yellow roses on our terrace. And yes, this is the most beautiful home we ever stayed in…
