On the Porch with My Spin
a poem about a laptop and places to write
I used to write mostly in the dark extra bedroom, lovely but too shadowy and dim, a room with things to sort and pack and decide about and I don’t want neglected tasks whispering as I create and ignore what needs to be done.
Now, I have an Acer Spin that’s light and easy like a spring morning, and goes effortlessly from here to there, unencumbered by those pesky wires that kept me tethered to a desk in a room, too shadowy and dim, with too many burdens of responsibility.
I can sit in my rocker in the light and bright room for living, my feet on a stool mismatched to the chair, ignoring the TV that my other half watches, ignoring the cat that mews for my lap, occupied by the light and easy Spin.
Or, I can venture to the porch, Spin in hand, flip on the ceiling fan because, well, because Florida, and sit in a wooden rocker with new cushions, or a sliding rocker with old ones, a rocker that matches the stool that’s inside, not out.
And, I can write while listening to the cardinals and whistling ducks who don’t whistle but squeal like little piggies, and the crows who squawk or the hawks who cry as they swoop and sail over the lake and the pine trees.
I can almost not hear the TV that is on more than off, and almost not hear the traffic on the street that leads to other avenues of schools and businesses, and I can write and be almost part of nature, close enough on a day with three-digit degrees.
And, I can watch approaching storms because, well, because Florida, and I am safe and dry and cool with my Spin on my lap and a cat curled on a cat tree and a dog at my feet, and the day unfolded before me, while I create and write about being on the porch with my Spin.
