On the Origins of Spaces Between Words

Or, the end of lexical solidarity

Photo by Markus Winkler on Unsplash

In the good old days, each new word would attach itself to the previous one, forming an impenetrable chain of lexical solidarity.

The first word to challenge this custom was ‘hygiene’, which insisted on keeping a safe distance.

The isolation from loved ones was hard, but the other words agreed it was for the best.

There were exceptions: “extra” could continue combining with “ordinary” and “mountain” was allowed to keep its beloved “top”.

German words, on the other hand, decided not to ban mass gatherings.

Thank you for reading. Sorry it was a bit short, but that’s the thing with micro fiction — it never outstays its welcome!
