Ode to the Berries

A poem

My breakfast is full of berries, freshly picked from a roadside farmer’s stand.

Raspberries, the color of my heart and the food of the Olympic Gods.

Strawberries are most kind and humble, signifies the sweetness of life.

Blackberries, hearty like juicy beads of fire, a nice way to top off yogurt or oatmeal.

Elderberries, folklore says, can cause deadly dreams if you’re not careful.

Cranberries, on the other hand, are rather tart and grown in cranberry fields forever.

Blueberries, are my favorite, although they resemble the eye of a rabbit.

But I will not eat a poisonous Mulberry, a berry I sang about as a child on a cold and frosty morning.
