Summary

The October Writing Challenge is an open-ended, rule-free event that encourages writers to respond to daily prompts and engage in peer review through the Bacon and Beach Day Publication.

Abstract

The October Writing Challenge is an initiative designed to inspire writers by providing a new writing prompt for each weekday of the month. Beginning on October 3rd, participants are invited to reflect on the prompts, write for at least an hour, and then post their responses to the Bacon and Beach Day Publication. This platform allows for a community-driven peer review process, where writers can give and receive feedback using the rose, thorn, bud method—acknowledging what they appreciate, what needs improvement, and suggesting areas for development. The author has prepared for the challenge by drafting responses to each prompt, including a title, subtitle, and a relevant image. The challenge embraces the diverse celebrations throughout October, offering numerous themes for writers to explore. Past challenges from previous months are also available for those who wish to participate in other periods.

Opinions

  • The author believes in the value of preparation, having created drafts with titles, subtitles, and images for each prompt.
  • There is an emphasis on the importance of community feedback and mutual support among writers, as evidenced by the suggested peer review style.
  • The author is enthusiastic about the variety of celebrations in October, viewing them as opportunities for creative inspiration.
  • The challenge is designed to be inclusive and flexible, with the only guideline being the absence of rules, encouraging writers to express themselves freely.
  • The author encourages participation by providing early access to the prompts, allowing time for contemplation and preparation.

The only rule is that there are none.

Now, don’t be upset if you didn’t get to contribute to September’s challenge or you didn’t get to contribute the way you wanted to. There’s a new one for October! It’s a little early but I am going to release it early so you have time to prepare.

Starting October 3rd there is a new writing challenge! For every weekday in October, I have posted a short writing prompt. The idea is to read the prompt and chew on it for a while before writing. Then, respond to the post for at least one hour. Post your response to the Bacon and Beach Day Publication where like-minded writers can respond to your work and you can respond to others. I have suggested that we use the rose, thorn, bud style of peer review. This means we comment on one thing we love or appreciate about the work, one thing we think needs work, and one thing that you think the author can develop either in that piece or another.

Now, let me tell you how I have prepared myself for next month’s challenge which is only a few days away. First, I have taken each prompt and created a draft. My title is the prompt, the subtitle is the date, and then I chose an image that relates to my gut reaction to the quote.

This month I have searched the various celebrations created for the different days in October. You have options. There are far more reasons to celebrate in the past several years than there ever have been before. Let’s take advantage!!!!
