Obsidian Revisited

The story so far…

Photo by Dose Media on Unsplash

I’ve been using Obsidian for little over 3 months.

Rewind….

Actually, I first downloaded it and looked at it back in January 2022 ⬇️

However, when I first started using it, I felt quite overwhelmed.

It promises so much, but to get there, it’s a steep learning curve; the various options for configuration are insane and it really needs time spent with it to “make it work” for you.

Disgruntled, I put it back down.

Revisited

I decided to have another look after I saw some videos on YouTube that resonated with me. and I started to use it for work.

I manage a team and need to keep review notes, along with objectives, as well as focussing on the day-to-day, planning etc.

Some might say that Obsidian isn’t designed for this, but I say, if it works for you, then go for it.

I’m a huge fan of Drafts, and written plenty about that, but it has started to feel messy, as a repository. It’s great for quick notes, and notes that are transient in design, but not for storing documents.

The organisation in Apple Notes doesn’t work for me; it’s not flexible enough.

With Obsidian, it feels like the best of both worlds.

Not to mention that the files are all plain text, so can be viewed and edited outside of Obsidian.

Plugins

Obsidian can be extended to fit your workflow with a host of plugins. There are many of them, but I’ve only installed a small set for my needs.

  • QuickAdd: A powerful way to create templated documents, with pre-formatted information, as well as capturing content into files
  • Templater: Insert variables and functions into notes
  • Dataview: A way to view the Obsidian Vault as a database, to filter, sort and display data from your notes.
  • Things3 Sync: Create tasks in a note, and have them added to Things3.

There are others, but these are the main ones. They can all be triggered via the Command Palette, or via keyboard shortcuts.

What Do I Do With It?

I have created a few templates, and in keeping with using automation whenever I can, I’ve set them up to trigger via a button on my Stream Deck.

When a 1–2–1 doc is created, it adds the team members name, and also adds it into their folder, in Obsidian.

I use a Notes doc for each team member, and I trigger this with a command, that let’s me choose the member and type the note directly into the window.

This is added behind the scenes, so doesn’t interrupt my flow.

Of course, there are other documents that I create on the fly and being a fan of automation, I continue to find ways to make it quick and easy to interact.

I use Dataview to create a table of contents style report to see all the relevant documents for each team member.

My journey using Obsidian is well underway and all I can say is, if you are interested, then perseverance is the key. I continue to watch videos and read articles to help broaden my knowledge.

Do you use Obsidian? Do you have any tips?
