Resolved: Entire chain of events here:
I haven’t been paying attention to my medium payouts because recently, no matter how much I write or how many people clap or how many followers I get, the payout is about $2.
This is so familiar. It reminds me of the scenario of my first data breach, where I consistently got $2 and then my payments stopped.
Would be ironic or coincidental or something. Though in this case, I have nothing to do with the web site configuration. It’s really up to Medium to make sure these things are working properly or notify the customer if there is any issue with the data the customer has entered or a problem with the integration of Medium and Stripe.
Trying to figure out what is going on
Well, even though it’s only $2, I noticed a while back I wasn’t getting the payments. It wasn’t worth my time to bother about it, but I recently started looking around to see what is going on.
First of all, my address on my tax information was out of date, so I updated that. I don’t recall getting a request for new information at my primary Medium email address or the one that was on the tax form. I also don’t think that my old tax information would have caused a problem for Medium. It would only be a problem for me when getting documents by mail, which I never have that I know of, from Medium.
I searched through all my emails for any emails from Medium that might be related to this tax form or Medium and Stripe. I’m not seeing anything saying there is an issue with my payments. Medium is reporting the amount I’m making each month in email, even though I’m not seeing it in my bank account.
As I just wrote, emails for my blogs weren’t going out either recently.
I believe that is fixed now. But it makes me wonder what other emails I may have missed.
In addition, I can’t find any emails from Stripe.
Well, I read that without a proper tax form I might not get payments. It’s not clear if I will receive the payments that I did not receive to date if the tax form was the issue. But I don’t see how it could be.
Cannot verify or change the Stripe account associated with Medium
I have another issue as well. I cannot see the Stripe settings in Medium or what Stripe account is connected to my Medium account. I looked through all the settings I could find on Medium. The only thing I found was a link to the “Stripe Dashboard” which has a login to Stripe.
OK but I don’t know what email I used to sign up to Stripe. I have searched all my emails and I don’t see any emails from Stripe at all. I tried every email address I can think of including all those that existed in my Medium account on the password reset option on Stripe. None of them are linked to a Stripe account.
I set up a new Stripe account and logged in from that Stripe Dashboard link in Medium and don’t see anything related to Medium.
So my question is, how am I supposed to know what is linking my Medium account to a Stripe account? How can I know if someone else linked their own Stripe account to my Medium account and is receiving my $2 per month. (Woo. Don’t spend it all in one place, hacker, if that is the case.)
I tried to search around for now to change the Stripe account associated with my Medium account. I found a page to apply for the partner program so I went through that. I’m already in the partner program. There was no link to modify or specify my Stripe account.
I hope there is nothing wrong with the Medium/Stripe integration. Troy Hunt just had an issue with Stripe integration, but I haven’t been getting payments for months so it’s probably not the same issue.
The other problem is — I can’t contact Medium because the contact page is not working. I wrote about that here. I’m not sure if it’s directing to some other domain besides Medium.com or that portion of the site is on something I’ve blocked or what.
[Update: I figured out why the contact form wasn’t working — was in an incognito window. Submitted a request and hoping can get this resolved quickly.]
Maybe I have to call Stripe to try to figure out from their side how to get the email for the account associated with my Medium payments. It really seems like there should be a way to verify or modify this on Medium.
I could spend a lot more time searching around and trying to figure this out but I have more important things to do right now. I wish whatever is wrong here would magically fix itself and I would get the payments due to me. I’m sure it won’t be that simple.
