March Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Pet People”

Kitty loved me, yes, she did!

I’ve never had my own pets, not counting the community dogs we all looked after. They were always named Timmy or Jimmy and were always welcome at home. They would hang around the porch, happy to be petted and fed. They’d have puppies and those would be cuddled . . . some would find loving homes and the ones that didn’t become the community babies.

The only pets I have been really close to were my best friend’s dogs. To this day we don’t know their breed — they were mixed — and we didn’t care. This lady you see in the photo somehow ended up being named Kitty — probably because the neighbor had a cat and when we “kitty, kitty, kitty” -ed her, this pup assumed we were calling her and the name stuck.

Kitty had two babies — Khushboo and Badshah. Yes, we were weird with our naming. Among the three, Kitty was closest to me. Each time I visited, she would immediately settle down comfortably against me or in my lap, depending on what I was doing. It was a beautiful quiet friendship. So amusing when she would nudge my hand towards herself so I could massage her while I chatted. It was a sad, sad day when she passed away and it was heart-breaking to see her grown babies mourning with us.

On a silly note — I was 33 in this photo and this is the photo I sent to “prospective” grooms, much to my family’s fury. Still, I did find my soulmate, so there!

Thank you Mary Chang Story Writer. Happiness is remembering wonderfully nostalgic moments — one memory leads to another and I love it. Your post about the kitty reminded me of my photo!
