No, One Unicorn Article Doesn’t Make You a Successful Writer
In business, a unicorn is a startup valued above $1 billion. On Medium, it’s an article with 10,000 claps or more.
When hitting the jackpot, people tend to brag. It’s a normal phenomenon known as being human. Their brain gets bigger, their ego increases tenfold, and they suddenly think they have all the answer to life’s questions and more.
Is it true? Or is there something they don’t realize? Maybe they have a blind spot …
Successful people tend to forget they were EXTREMELY lucky and are more than willing to share life advice that will ‘help’ everybody who’s listening to them (and their bank account). But what worked for them won’t necessarily work for you.
The article about the 10,000-clap article is a classic. It will be full of writer’s life-changing advice like:
- don’t give up
- titles are key
- provide value
- be entertaining
- edit drunk, publish sober
NO WAY!!!! Who wouldn’t want to pay for such knowledge in the shape of gold nuggets?! Sarcasm.
I’m a pink belt in social media marketing, and I’ve seen countless people get viral once.
- ONLY ONCE.
- They were lucky.
- A unicorn visited them, and they got to ride it.
Why? Nobody knows.
Then there are other people who reliably and regularly put out unicorns. They’re the ones you should follow and study. Not the one-hit wonders.
I could give you my grandson as an example, but that would make his head too big for his hat, and that wouldn’t be true because his 10,000-clap articles were pure luck.
Have a look at Hogan Torah instead. He’s good. You can learn something from all his bragging.
Thanks to Jay C Wells for inspiring this short article with his prompt about unicorns. May he get 10,000 claps on his stories!
Grandma Smillew loves her afternoon cup of cocoa, scrabble, and her grandson, Smillew Rahcuef. She’s also a pink belt in social media and marketing strategies. If you want to make her happy, follow her on Medium and write for one of her publications: All About Medium and Grandma Power.
