Newsflash: The Universe is Offering Full Time Writing Gigs
Who’s with me?

It’s a time of change. Many of us are being forced to find new ways to live.
Uncertainty is in the air. Trouble is not only brewing, but spilling out of the cauldron all over the ground.
The environment. Capitalism and consumerism. Minorities being trampled.
It’s time to make choices, and move forward. If we look for the chances given us, we might be able to bootstrap our way into a better life. And it could involve being a writer.
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” — Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities
This quote is so appropriate it hurts. We have more wisdom and foolishness than we know what to do with right now.
The old way isn’t working for some of us
If you are in the same boat as me, you have less opportunity at the ole brick and mortar than ever. Your training and skillset might appear to be garbage. You are abandoned by big business and corporations. Out on the sidewalk beside a sad bag of rags and some moldy old tangerines. It seems hopeless.
We find ourselves on a tightrope, crossing a chasm. Behind us is our comfortable past with it’s certainties. Below us is fear, failure and starvation. In front is the unknown darkness.
All we can do is quit and fall, or move forward and find out what awaits us.
If you can write
Some of us have word skills. We aren’t hopeless, tool-less losers with no way to contribute. Type, scrawl or dictate into the future. If you have words in you, then keep moving forward. Don’t fall off the tightrope by freezing and slumping into depression. Balance and keep going.
Don’t think you’re good enough? Do it anyway. You get better through practice. Quantity leads to quality, one story at a time. To become a master might take 10000 hours. You don’t get that kind of practice without writing a ton. Let’s get on it.
“In fact, researchers have settled on what they believe is the magic number for true expertise: ten thousand hours.” — Malcolm Gladwell, Outliers: The Story of Success
Find a mentor. Set some goals. Don’t wait until the new year to turn over a new leaf, start right here, right now! There’s no valid excuse except broken fingers. But with dictation, even that one is suspect.
Don’t know what to write about? Then write about that! Or google article ideas, pick the first thing that comes up, and start.
More opportunity for writing than ever
The time is now. The universe is handing us our golden ticket. The pump is primed and we are in the right spot.
Against all odds, literacy continues to rise all over the world. A higher percentage of people can read, and we are always building more people. With more readers being born every day, words are the one thing that we never have enough of. The demand is there.
“The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades” —song by Timbuk 3
Let’s not miss out. Someone will write those words, and it could be me or you. It’s like a story gold rush out there, except we don’t have to prospect. The world is handing us this chance on a golden platter.
Platforms like Medium give us a system and a chance to find our way off this tightrope. All we have to do is the work. The future is bright.
Come work for the universe
Do you want to be a writer? Then join me. Let’s work on writing our metric ton. It will take years. But a journey this big has massive rewards. But not only money, I’m not referring to dollars. You might get those too, but this is about finding your calling.
I mean self worth. Helping others with advice or information. Entertaining readers with your fiction. Reporting facts about our universe. Giving a glimpse into your soul so that others can benefit from your experiences.
Writing is the master trade. Without it, none of the others can communicate what they know. Books, stories and articles are how we all grow together. Master words, and make a lot of them.
Universe, I accept your offer. I will take that position. I’m available immediately.
