Negative emotions are not destructive, but a reason to live — Is it true?
Change your thoughts about negatives emotions
Negative emotions such as anxiety have always been frowned upon as unnatural and destructive. The ancient Roman poet Horace described anger as short-lived insanity two thousand years ago. But over the past 150 years, since Darwin’s book on the Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals, we have begun to better understand emotions such as anger, fear, and anxiety, and to know that they are more beneficial than dangerous.
They are survival tools that have evolved over millions of years and are meant only for human survival, for which they provide information and teach preparedness.
Anxiety is the knowledge about an uncertain future and that something bad is going to happen, but something good can happen. So with anxiety, there exists an exception.
However, this concern is not knowledge of existing dangers that are obvious. It’s called fear that teaches us to fight, that tells us to run away or to hold on.
Anxiety, on the other hand, teaches us to be prepared so that we can not only avoid trouble in the future but also turn positive possibilities into reality.
Our brain works better when we are worried. It also sharpens our senses of reward and social connections, so we know what to do, and who to meet. Seen from this point of view, these emotions, which are considered negative, are not destructive but a reason to live.
However, scientific research related to this has not yet reached the public and most medical professionals are not aware of it. We treat it as an enemy at the door, but in fact, it is our companion.
