avatarFred: Almost Famous

Summary

An Australian writer shares an innovative idea inspired by Singaporean eatery napkins to promote his Medium writing by leaving personalized "calling cards" in public places to gain followers.

Abstract

While on vacation in Singapore, the author, Fred, was inspired by the creative use of table napkins at a restaurant called CHUPITOS, which featured a design that could be filled out and left as a calling card. Recognizing the potential for self-promotion, Fred adapted this concept for his own purposes as a Medium writer. He photographed and modified a napkin to include his Medium profile details, intending to distribute these unique "business cards" in various public locations to attract new readers and followers. The article also touches on Fred's past experience with a significant family history connected to Singapore during World War II, which he has documented in another Medium story. He encourages readers to engage with his content through comments and claps and to follow him on Medium for more stories.

Need A New Friend or A Date? Here’s a New Idea I Picked Up In Singapore.

And MEDIUM WRITERS could use it to GET MORE FOLLOWERS

THESE WORDS … FOUND ON A TABLE NAPKIN … GAVE ME AN IDEA!

Whilst on holiday in Singapore recently, my wife & I went out for an evening drink and meal to one of Singapore’s waterside eateries, and we found a lovely place overlooking the water and the tourist boats. It was at a place called Clarke Quay, a lovely place for an evening stroll, and the eatery’s name was CHUPITOS.

A bunch of table napkins was placed on each table. They sparked my imagination immediately … Here’s one of the napkins … :

TABLE NAPKIN * (supplied by the CHUPITOS eatery SINGAPORE)

“Wow”, I thought … what an interesting way to leave a calling card … just fill in some details and leave it behind, and who knows the outcome!

Well, for me, I didn’t need a date (I was already with my favorite person), but I just couldn’t leave it there, so I collected a few napkins and took them home with me to Australia … to develop the idea that had actually come-to-mind there and then in Singapore.

What was my idea? Well, as a Medium writer, I saw it as an opportunity to introduce myself to an unknown public of readers. By filling out one of the napkins and adding a link to my writing on Medium, I could leave it somewhere (and that could be just about anywhere) … Think about it: leave it in a pub; on a park bench; on your seat at the theater … anywhere! The field is open!!

And so, when I returned to my home in Queensland’s Australia I used my phone camera to copy one of the napkins, and after giving it a border-surround, I transferred it to my Medium files, to a folder I keep my draft ideas & pics in. I then used the pic for this article ((the one a-top this article).

I then took another blank-space napkin and filled out the blanks with my Medium-writer details. It was then photographed in the same way as the first one, and similarly saved to my draft folder.

This new one was now loaded-for-action! Here’s a copy of that finished napkin:

MY NAPKIN … READY TO GET MORE FOLLOWERS * Fred’s added words - Napkin by CHUPITOS SINGAPORE

Maybe I can improve its presentation, but for now, it’s ready for a trial run. This is how I plan to use it:

  1. Print it onto paper
  2. Copy it several times
  3. Trim the copies so that they fit nicely into my wallet or shoulder bag
  4. Store them there, ready for ‘distribution’ as the occasion arises.

Will it work? Will it attract genuine readers? Will it be an absolute flop?

Takeaway:

Time will tell if my idea works … but you might see an even better way of using the idea. If so, why not leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts.

If you do that now (via the clap & comment icons at the end), do please return to this section and read my postscript afterthought below:

An Afterthought Postscript:

After writing this short article (inspired by my visit to Singapore), I realized that Singapore hadn’t yet featured in any of my previously-published stories … but then, I remembered:

I once wrote a story that did mentioned Singapore in that it contained a small but very significant Singapore reference that had a very great impact for me and my family during World War II. This Singapore reference … so important to me and my family … is found in one of the key paragraphs of that story:

And here’s that key paragraph:

(at the beginning of World War II) my Dad had first been posted to Singapore, which fell to the advancing Japanese army in 1942 and many British soldiers and airmen were captured and made prisoners of war. I remember Mum telling me many years later that they (the family in our home-town of Oldham in Lancashire, England) had feared that he was one of the captured.

The story from which the above reference is extracted is a true story titled: The King Sent Me This letter … I Was Five-Years-Old … Click on the link, or the box-link below, to read this fascinating true story of a letter sent to me by King George VI in 1946 when I was 5 years-old.

Hope you enjoy this extra read.

Thanks for reading … Fred
