Navigating the Shadows of Omegle: Confronting Racism and Online Exploitation

Omegle’s scarring underbelly exists right on the surface web

The internet is a strange place, it has so much to offer, yet so much that should not be accessed, there is always a part of the internet that needs to be revoked. After my piece on the Dark Web that I have linked below, I had a musing of another website that according to me existed on the surface web and did the same level of damage just like any other website on the dark web or inside the Onion network. I am talking about Omegle. You might have seen YouTubers doing funny conversations on Omegle, singers singing songs in their language to foreigners in this video chatting app that connects you to random strangers spread across the wormhole of the internet.

The chubby videos and adorable proposals of love are just one shade of what the video chatting app had to offer, the other shade was rather sinister. The site, as of now, got banned last year (2023) in September because of a petition filed by a young woman against the platform for pairing her with a pedophile who coerced her to become his digital sex slave ordering her to send naked pictures of her to him for three years. She sued the platform for $22 million. The incident happened in 2014 when the plaintiff was 11 years old. She also filed a case against the perpetrator who was doing this from his family home in Canada while the minor was from the United States.

Before discussing my experience, let me give you a brief introduction to Omegle.

Omegle was a free web-based online chat service that was launched by 18-year-old Leif K-Brooks of Brattleboro, Vermont. To know more about him you just need to read the signing-off message he jotted before shutting down the platform. He talked about how he would hesitate to go to his professors or peers to discuss any informative knowledge about anything. It was the internet that provided him with that space where he could meet random strangers and enrich his knowledge base without the fear of hesitation. That’s when he got the idea to build a platform like Omegle where random users without having to register could immediately chat with their peers. Omegle operated from 2009 to 2023, however, the platform started as a text chat service and then transitioned to a video chatting service.

Omegle’s boom during COVID-19 Pandemic

Omegle was a website that was steadily growing and expanding its base. The boom of Omegle skyrocketed when the lockdown became a norm in many countries. Omegle started to receive almost 3–3.5 million active users accessing the platform every day during the worldwide lockdown, the numbers stayed steady till its shutdown. The YouTube phenomenon of filming pranks, proposals, and showing talent on Omegle became a star-studded affair in the virtual world. Everyone used Omegle to find some closure during the lockdown where you had nothing to do except sit and wait for the lockdown to end. Omegle offered the alternative to building human connections and having genuine conversations with people overseas.

My experience using Omegle

I too started using Omegle after I saw a Youtuber making a video about the text and video chatting platform. When I first accessed the platform, I met nice people. I remember having chats with a British lady, an American teen, and a Nigerian man. We had pleasant conversations about our work, what shows we were watching, the kind of food we had, etc. And people do get frank with you when you talk in Omegle. Everything was fine until one fine day someone called me the N-word which I knew was an American slang used for African Americans. Now the N-word has been quite popular in urban lingo, and I knew what that meant, I also knew it was used by African Americans within themselves despite the term having attributes of racial profiling.

It was interesting because I was Indian, and I have darkish brown skin, but many within the chatscreens of Omegle viewed me as a black guy and they would hurl racist abuses and slur at me. To an extent where I was being called dirty, filthy, and ugly looking. Now, this happened on a few occasions, I did not respond to these comments because after all these are random hobos that should not be given attention, but if I skim my Indian identity off of me and see and view myself as a Black man, my POV will change and I would feel sad that this kind of hurtful comments were made on my skin or I am being judged because of my skin, something that I have no control over.

The reported incidents

Now my incident was preferably anecdotal, but racism being perpetrated on individuals on this platform was nothing new but a common affair. Several incidents have taken place and are part of the public domain where users have made illicit racist attempts against another fellow user during their random chat session on Omegle.

On December 20, 2020, A NBC report stated that two young men named Hidaya Saban and Alees Elshiek entered terms like ‘KKK’, ‘BLM’ and ‘racist’ inside the student section’s interest bar of Omegle, they encountered one masked man who talked about a racist riddle implying people of color commit lots of crime as if their color was the reason for them to commit a crime. As per the duo who films interactions of this sort and then uploads them on TikTok, 9 out of 10 people who they are matched with propagated racist ideas or are inherently racist themselves. In 2020, John Bradley a TikTok user complained and filmed a video of two teens calling him ‘slave’ and ‘nigger’ while making whipping noises.

On July 25, 2021, An ABC report shared that the Anti-Defamation League organization while investigating a case found Tor Brooks an Australian Far-right internet personality also known as ‘Catboy Kami’ on Omegle, who took part in the ‘Stop the Steal rally’ in Phoenix Arizona was accused of mimicking George Floyd’s murder on the platform. Catboy Kami was also seen wearing dark-skinned costumes to mimic other ethnic groups and religions to ridicule colored communities.

Child Sexual Abuse on Omegle

One of the most harrowing things about the platform has to be its explicit sexualized live-streaming that takes place. I did discover that initially in the restricted section, but it was not that frequent. However, the unrestricted section had many adult males in large numbers masturbating in front of their computer screens. The most disturbing aspect is not that there were naked men of all ages doing that.

It broke my heart when I saw kids being exposed live on the camera in the unrestricted section. This was unprecedented and problematic, and when I first saw it, it really shook me to my core and I immediately blocked access to Omegle on my PC. There have been many reports in the public domain that discuss such nerve-wracking sensitive cases. In 2020, there was an incident in Guelph, Canada where a teacher was arrested for broadcasting live child pornography on the platform, he pleaded guilty to all the charges in 2022. In 2021, an Australian man was arrested from Central Coast in New South Wales when he advertised his search for having sexual relations with underage minors. The platform, however, exited the internet, via a tongue-in-cheek see-off letter from its founder, but it did not have any mechanism in place to censor explicit content or flag the presence of minors in the platform.

The many problems of Omegle

With every social media evolving every platform has grown its defenses in terms of providing a much-needed firewall to protect children, and ban any use of racist slurs and threats. Omegle existed on the surface web without those checks. They did something regarding accessibility with parents' consent for younger children, But at one click of a button, children can access the unrestricted spaces and often were taken advantage of by pedophiles.

In his exit letter, the Omegle founder mentions the plaintiff who sued Omegle for a $22 million lawsuit, mentioning her as A.M. and acknowledging the pain and trauma she suffered, he also externally links the settlement agreement. But this is one case that’s in the limelight, many such cases maybe did not receive the same attention. There might be many that we may not even know of. I would have preferred the founder to face criminal prosecution for his negligence over and over again by disregarding potential dangers that it created for vulnerable communities, women folk, and children. Some actions are often not justifiable even if it means your intentions were right doing them. I hope there is a halt in the creation of Omegle-like platforms that also perpetuate anti-social elements that can wreak havoc in societies through their perverted actions and malaise.
