Do You Hate Big Tech As Much As I Do?
The nightmare: A senior solutions architect’s escape from big tech turmoil to a liberating revolution in 2024

Hey there!
Ever find yourself in the frustrating web of Big Tech’s chaos?
Well, you’re not alone! Let me take you on a rollercoaster ride through my own Big Tech nightmare, spilling all the details on why 2024 is the year I’m turning the tables on the tech giants.
So, let’s set the stage. I land this dreamy Senior Solutions Architect role at AWS in early 2020.
I’ve curated some of my other articles, seamlessly embedded into this piece. Explore them now for richer insights or save them for later reads — they complement the unfolding narrative.
The process was no walk in the park — a recruiter phone screen, an online assessment, two technical phone screens, and six virtual loop interviews.
Phew! Just two days after my virtual loop interview, an AWS recruiter reaches out to extend congratulations for successfully passing the interview.
I’m ecstatic, imagining all the groundbreaking work I’ll be doing.
But here’s the twist. They propose a position in Philadelphia, insisting that relocation from my Houston home to Philly is a non-negotiable requirement, contrary to our initial agreement that the location was open for discussion.
Imagine the shock, akin to discovering pineapple on pizza — a distasteful surprise. This recruiter-induced whiplash prompts me to question, “Does Amazon have their act together?”
The lack of consistency in the recruitment process, especially after successfully navigating their rigorous procedures and securing the job, leaves me questioning the integrity of their practices.
Initially promised negotiable locations, the sudden shift raises concerns. Uprooting a family of five from a stable job in a beloved city to relocate to another state with state taxes and colder weather? A definite deal-breaker.
Assertively negotiating for a remote role based out of Houston, I push back, and within two weeks, I identify and am offered another role that allows me to work remotely from Texas.
Now in AWS, I embark on a three-month-long onboarding plan — yes, three months for onboarding in the realm of Big Tech.
The apparent contradiction with my claim of a less-than-ideal Big Tech life prompts exploration.
Fast forward to the onboarding process, where I find myself watching outdated videos and shadowing colleagues to get ready for my new role.
Despite the seemingly ample three months provided, I received a document containing obsolete videos. I’m left to navigate through a maze of links, with managerial guidance conspicuously absent.
The first three months at Amazon feel like a solitary journey, lacking the anticipated camaraderie.
Immediately after completing my onboarding plan, I discovered that Amazon harbors a relentless Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) culture.
This begins casting a shadow of job instability, transforming the workplace into a high-pressure environment.
The constant fear of having to please managers to secure one’s position has a profound impact on mental and physical well-being.
The repercussions go beyond mere mental strain, leading to heightened instances of burnout and exhaustion.
This highlights the necessity for a more supportive work culture.
The atmosphere at Amazon is marred by unnecessary peer competition, creating an unhealthy work environment.
Colleagues are compelled to meet arbitrary targets, sacrificing collaboration and innovation, thereby fostering a toxic atmosphere.
This detrimental competition escalates during the promotion process, as the pursuit of recognition and advancement sows discord among colleagues.
As I settle into my role at Amazon, thoughts of reaching the next level and snagging a promotion start to occupy my mind.
Little do I know that the promo process at Amazon is like a disheartening game. People are crafting fake documents and whipping up presentations for projects that were never even used, revealing a shady side to climbing the career ladder in the company.
Getting through the twists and turns of Amazon’s promo process turns out to be one of the more challenging aspects in the tech giant’s domain.
I begin observing contradictory leadership principles that turn out to be a source of confusion. Instances where two principles contradict each other highlight the inconsistency in the company’s approach to leadership.
One example involves the clash between the principles “Strive to be Earth’s Best Employer” and “Insist on the Highest Standards.”
The former encourages a focus on employee well-being and a supportive work environment, while the latter emphasizes an unwavering commitment to excellence and maintaining the highest standards.
In practice, situations may arise where achieving the highest standards puts excessive pressure on employees, creating a conflict to be the best employer and foster a healthy workplace.
This contradiction can lead to confusion and challenges in maintaining a balanced and employee-centric approach.
As I delve deeper into Amazon’s conflicting leadership principles, another hurdle looms — the compensation structure.
Specifically, the heavy reliance on Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) became a pivotal aspect of my Big Tech journey.
With 40% of my compensation tied to RSUs, the vesting schedule introduces a layer of complexity to my financial considerations.
Every six months, a portion of these RSUs vests, but here’s the catch — leaving Amazon even a day before the vesting date means forfeiting a substantial chunk of this compensation.
This reality not only imposes financial constraints but also becomes a critical factor in shaping my career decisions.
The appeal of RSUs, while significant, comes with its own set of challenges and considerations that add to the complexities of navigating the tech giant’s policies.
Transitioning from the complexities of Amazon’s compensation structure, let’s dive into another aspect that fueled my discontent — the persistent pattern of flawed goal-setting.
The process of establishing overtly unrealistic goals at the start of the year evolves into a frustratingly repetitive issue, especially when these goals become the yardstick during performance reviews.
Instead of assessing genuine accomplishments, the measurement against impractical benchmarks becomes a source of ongoing frustration.
To compound matters, leadership’s struggle to define goals persists until the end of May during my initial year at Amazon.
This not only adds to the existing challenges but also underscores the need for a more streamlined and effective goal-setting approach within the organization.
My Big Tech Life in Retrospect Looking back, the choice to part ways with Amazon just before reaching my second-year milestone turned out to be a powerful decision.
This journey with Amazon provides valuable insights into corporate culture, personal well-being, and a true understanding of professional success.
As I move forward on my career path, I’m not just leaving a workplace; I’m discovering the truths that directed me toward a different direction, steering clear of the imposing presence of Amazon’s tech giant.
This departure signifies not just an end but a beginning — a transition that leads me to a brighter path beyond the massive walls of the tech giant.
May this account not only serve as a lesson but also inspire strength for those maneuvering the challenging landscape of the tech industry.
What I’m Doing in 2024 Instead? Now, let’s fast forward to 2024, when I’ve decided to script a new chapter in my professional journey, breaking free from the constraints of Big Tech life.
In 2024, I find myself embracing a transformative approach, redirecting my energy and skills toward a more fulfilling and balanced work-life equation. So, what am I doing instead?
Firstly, I’ve joined a small consulting partner and will be exploring the consulting world.
Liberated from the rigid structures of corporate giants, I’m now able to provide tailored solutions directly to clients, fostering a more personalized and impactful professional relationship.
This shift allows me to channel my expertise into projects that align with my values and goals.
No more navigating through convoluted bureaucratic mazes; I’m now steering my own ship, making decisions that resonate with my vision for success.
Additionally, I’ll be delving further into tech education and mentorship.
Recognizing the need for accessible and meaningful guidance in the ever-evolving tech landscape, I’m committed to sharing my experiences and knowledge with aspiring professionals.
Through workshops, online courses, and one-on-one mentorship, I’m contributing to the growth of individuals eager to navigate the tech industry.
It’s a gratifying endeavor, bridging the gap between seasoned professionals and those eager to carve their path in this dynamic field.
But that’s not all. 2024 marks the year of exploration and innovation. I’ve immersed myself in exciting projects that fuse technology with societal impact.
Whether it’s collaborating with startups focused on sustainable solutions or contributing to tech initiatives with a positive global footprint, I’m aligning my work with a purpose beyond just the bottom line.
In this new chapter, I’ve prioritized a healthy work-life balance. No more succumbing to the relentless demands of Big Tech.
I’m savoring the flexibility to set my schedule, allowing time for personal growth, family, and pursuits beyond the confines of a corporate environment.
In essence, 2024 represents a rebirth, a conscious decision to redefine success on my terms.
It’s not just about escaping the challenges of my Big Tech life but embracing a future where my professional journey aligns seamlessly with personal fulfillment and societal impact.
Join me in this exciting transition, where the traditional constraints of Big Tech are replaced with a dynamic and purpose-driven approach to work and life.
Let’s shape a narrative that goes beyond the confines of corporate giants, embracing a future where success is not measured solely by titles and compensation but by the positive influence we impart on the world around us.
