1. Harsh Onboarding Experience
The excitement of joining Amazon was overshadowed by a harsh onboarding process.
Despite having a generous three months, I was handed a document with outdated videos and left to navigate a sea of links.
The absence of managerial guidance left me feeling stranded, contributing to a lackluster start. In fact, I didn’t have the opportunity to meet my manager for the initial two weeks at Amazon.
2. Health Impacts of PIP Culture
Amazon’s Performance Improvement Culture created a constant fear of job instability, fostering a culture of perpetual peer pressure.
The anxiety of pleasing managers to secure one’s position took a toll on mental and physical health, turning the workplace into a battleground.
The impact reached beyond mental health, manifesting in increased cases of burnout and exhaustion, highlighting the need for a more balanced and supportive work culture.

3. Unhealthy Competition
The needlessly intense competition among peers tainted the work environment.
Colleagues were driven to score arbitrary numbers in the eyes of managers, even at the expense of others, creating a toxic atmosphere that hindered collaboration and innovation.

Witnessing individuals forge supporting documents and being asked to create presentations for unused projects exposed a darker side to career advancement within the company.

I’ve observed a significant number of colleagues at Amazon making the leap to other companies, seeking better titles and higher compensation.
It’s striking that the attrition rate at Amazon surpasses 60% after a mere two years of service.
7. Contradictory Leadership Principles
The clash of Amazon's leadership principles added confusion to an already complex landscape.

This discrepancy is not an isolated incident; my tenure at Amazon has been marked by numerous instances where the proclaimed leadership principles fell short in practice.
8. RSUs and the Cruel Vesting System
The compensation structure, particularly the heavy reliance on Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), unveiled a brutal reality.
The 40% tied to RSUs, vesting every six months, meant leaving a significant portion on the table if departure occurred even a day before the mark.
