Nature’s Way to Build a Stronger, Healthier Life
A lesson from horticulture

Did you know that gardening and life have a great deal in common? Let’s examine a simple lesson from gardening that will help you grow a great life!
The garden of life
Are you familiar with the word horticulture? It is the art or practice of cultivating and managing a garden. We can learn some great life lessons from this practice.
When we care for plants by providing them with water, sunshine, and nutrients, they remain healthy and grow. When we care for ourselves with water, sunshine, and nutrients, we grow in body and mind.
In addition to providing the plant or tree with what it needs to grow, it is essential to prune its unhealthy parts to allow it to flourish. The same is true for your life.
It is well-known in horticulture that proper pruning is required to produce healthier, heartier plants. Pruning in life will likewise produce a healthier, heartier mind and body.
Why prune?
Comparisons of horticulture and agriculture to life have existed for millennia. Since humanity has been primarily an agrarian society until recently, agriculture and horticulture have taught us many lessons. Sadly, in modern times, some of these lessons have been lost, especially the lesson of pruning.
“As the gardener, by severe pruning, forces the sap of the tree into one or two vigorous limbs, so should you stop off your miscellaneous activity and concentrate your force on one or a few points.” Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
Pruning is necessary to live a prosperous, joyful, and fulfilled life. A plant or life left on its own, allowed to grow with little or no resistance, cannot thrive. Besides becoming unwieldy, it will be unattractive from an aesthetic standpoint. By pruning, you remove the unproductive parts, making the rest of the plant or your life healthier.
The benefits of pruning a plant or your life make it:
1. Stronger and healthier
2. More productive
3. More attractive
4. Happier and less stressed
Let’s look at each of these benefits more closely.
1. Stronger and healthier
You benefit tremendously by pruning what interferes with your ability to think or have a healthy body. One of the most wasteful things in America is the time spent watching television. This “bubble gum for the brain” hinders your ability to think, contemplate, and become clear about more essential things.
While television can stunt the growth of your mind, it can also be very unhealthy for your body. Too much sitting and munching on junk food will shorten your life by many years. Add the lost potential and opportunities to a shorter life, and you lose big time!
Did you know the average person spends more than 4 hours, or 25% of their waking time watching TV? Imagine breaking (pruning) the television habit and what you could do with this newly available time! Who wouldn’t almost kill to have 25% more time available? Imagine the possibilities!
All you need do is prune (kill or remove) the habit by shutting off the TV!
2. More productive
It is well-known in horticulture that pruning benefits plants by enhancing their growth, yield, and fruit quality. Pruning things in your life can have similar benefits. Why? Because you can better direct vital nutrition to what remains, whether it is a plant, body, or mind.
Most everyone has heard the saying, “You are what you eat.” Said another way, this means you become what you feed yourself. The same is true whether it is a plant, body, or brain.
The way many of us treat our body and mind, you would think we have more than one! It would behoove you to care for your body and mind because you are along for the ride when they go downhill!
Imagine feeding your body and brain better nutrition with even a portion of the lost time you regain. You can radically change your life if you wish! Because of the pruning, you can fill your life with more productive things, such as:
- Eating healthier foods for your body and mind
- Growing your mind with curiosity, insight, knowledge, wisdom, and the desire to learn
- Uncovering ways to be more productive
- Achieving more at work and home
- improving your self-awareness and self-control
- Enhancing your relationships
- Developing new or better skills
- Becoming more at peace in your life!
With the additional time, you can also start a fun hobby, read a good book, or begin journaling. Each of these will expand your mind instead of stifling it like television.
While at it, why not spend some of that time saved by taking an interest in your body, food, nutrition, and exercise? Learning more about each can go a long way in changing your life from unhealthy to healthy. The benefits of proper nutrition, portion control, sleep, and exercise can change your life in days or weeks. The great thing about doing these things is that you will extend your life and gain a sharper mind and a better-functioning body.
Many books are available about what we can prune from our lives to become more productive. Beginning with the little things that can make the most significant impact is best. One of those little things is taking control of your schedule. What you do and where and who you spend time with is crucial to productivity. You can significantly enhance what you get done by simply scheduling time on your calendar for uninterrupted work.
A couple of additional items you can focus on are how many things you attempt to do simultaneously. Check out this article for an easy way to understand and begin implementing a life-changing habit you can form: A Simple Secret to Success — You can change your life forever.
Lastly, learning the art of saying no can impact your life immediately. Check out these brief articles for some great tips on saying no and why it is important to your life: Just Say No! — An important life skill to hone.
3. More attractive
Pruning a plant helps it become more aesthetically pleasing and more productive. Who wants an unkempt plant, after all? This is also true for you.
Who doesn’t want to look nice? Most of us care about our appearance, especially our appearance to others. It follows that because relationships are crucial to life, the more appealing you are, the better your relationships. But it is not only your outward appearance that attracts others. Your inward self matters to an even greater extent.
When you come across as pleasant, with a great attitude and a smile, all the beauty in the world will have difficulty competing. Some of us will need to prune away our poor people skills, lack of self-awareness and self-control, and as much of our bad attitude as possible. It is also not a bad idea to prune undesirable people from your life.
Your attitude is essential because it dramatically affects whether others want to be around you. By working on your mindset, you can change how you view the world and your attitude toward life and others, naturally improving your attractiveness.
Why not use some of the time saved to work on your mindset, attitude, and emotional intelligence?
Smiling more is something you can begin to practice right away. You do remember how to smile, I hope! Smile at the next person you see and watch them smile back at you. Smiling is highly contagious.

4. Happier and less stressed
Most of us know what takes away our happiness and stresses us. Why not prune whatever is stealing your joy and creating stress? Relationships are a great place to start. Consider pruning any bad relationships that are beyond hope and repair. The one exception to this rule for me is marriage. If the relationship is not abusive, it is almost always repairable through counseling. Any other relationship that stresses you may be a good candidate for pruning.
Prune as much negativity as you can from your thoughts and life. Negativity can come from many sources, such as the news, negative people, and yourself! The more you prune it, the happier and less stressed you will be.
And don’t forget to smile! Add some laughter to that smile several times daily, and you will relieve a ton of stress!
What else can you prune to lead a happier, less stressful life?
Final thoughts
Pruning is vital to plants and lives alike, providing them with healthy growth and the ability to flourish, but be careful not to over-prune. Cutting away too much can be harmful. However, by learning the lesson of pruning well, you can live the best life possible.
Imagine leading a highly productive and full life filled with good health, happiness, and joy. What more could a person want? You can have such a life when you take the lesson of pruning to heart and make it happen!
