My Wedding Weekend
My Dancing Elephants Press Writing Prompt Response

Lady Dr. Gabriella Korosi wrote about her weekend getaway in the Dancing Elephants Press Sunday writing prompt. It was a perfect prompt for me as this was the first weekend in a while where I actually did something away from my house. She is correct that time away is needed. I needed this trip.
Our weekend away started on Wednesday. It started with my traditional waiting for hours after I’m up and ready for the rest of my family to get ready. We then had an 8 hour drive to my mother-in-law’s house in Kentucky. This was not a fun day. It was a long time to be in a car, but it ended with dinner at Freddy’s, our favorite burger place we don’t have where we live.
The next day was uneventful. Most days at my MIL’s house are uneventful. This is one of the reasons I was annoyed that we were spending a day there instead of heading on to the place we would be staying for the wedding. It is not very exciting. I read my book. I took a walk. I watched random shows on TV. We played dominoes that night. Boring, but relaxing.
Friday was another travel day, but a much shorter travel day. We left my MIL’s after lunch and started the 2.5 hour drive to my brother’s house. There are more, younger people there, so it is a more fun place to be. My kids have cousins there to hang out with and we have my brother and his wife to talk to. We hung out, played cornhole, ate BBQ, and enjoyed the family time.
The next day was the big day. My nephew was getting married. The reason for the trip. The first wedding I have attended in years. The first family wedding I’ve been to since my wedding 30 years ago. The only negative — it was another hour drive to the wedding venue.
It was a good day, though. I was there with my family. My brother was there with his family. My sister was there with her family. A rare autumn get together. We all got to get dressed up. Another rarity. We celebrated my nephew and his bride. We had dinner and drinks. We danced. We took a lot of pictures. It was a nice family day.

We stopped on the way back to my brother’s house at Slim Chicken and had chicken tenders in our fancy clothes. We knew the teen who took our order, so that was a nice surprise as well. A good end to a good day.
The end of the trip is never fun and the drive makes it even less so. We started the long trek back home at 8:30 am and arrived back home at 10 pm.
It was a quick, tiring trip, but a fun one with family time I needed.
