My Collected Tips for Writing Boostworthy Essays, Histories, and Memoirs

This 13x Boosted Writer, Professor, and Editor shows you the ropes!

Update 1: Ariel Meadow Stallings has just mentioned the Medium blog as a great source on boosting. I read the various stories, agree, and have posted the link below.

Update 2: I just got my 13th boost on March 4!!!!

I’ve finally decided to put all my guides to boosting in one place!

As I write the 5th installment of my guide to boosting, I realize it’s much easier for me to just collate the guides in one story rather than laboriously adding links at the end of each article.

So here goes!

This first piece, Ego Boosts, Envy, and Engagement, was not intended to be a guide, but rather a story of my progress on Medium. At the time I wrote it, I was brimming with pride and joy, having just received a 7th boost. An 8th boost was quickly added a day later.

As you will see from my story posted just below, it was not a smooth trajectory. I started with multiple cat articles, very few of which were read — except by non-Medium friends on Facebook. Yes, they told me what a wonderful writer I was, but readers on Medium couldn’t have cared less. I had paltry views, reads, and claps that first month, from late May through late June.

Eventually, though, real progress came in my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th months on Medium.

After my 8th boost, I started to notice a flood of articles on boost writing on Medium. What to do, what not to do.

I thought to myself, why not me? The vast majority of articles on boosting or even just writing seemed terribly vague and amateurish. Be authentic. Be vulnerable. Make sure you don’t have grammatical and spelling errors. Well, DUH — thank you Captain Obvious!

Certainly, I could write a lot better? So I published the following piece on Illumination:

It was a basic guide to mastering the fundamentals of writing effective titles and paragraphs — the latter of which I struggled with when I first arrived at Medium, writing interminably long paragraphs.

I like to think it had real meat as I show examples to avoid from my earlier writings.

Then came Tips for Writing Boostworthy Essays, where I show writers how to tackle nonfiction pieces — like essays on politics, society, etc.

Here, I offer the basics of structure, research, and sources. How many other guide writers are doing this? Don’t just tell, SHOW — is my mantra.

My third piece focuses on memoir writing, particularly the writing of my first boosted story, chronologically speaking.

My fourth piece plunges into the boost debate. What are writers on boosts getting right — and wrong?

In the coming weeks, I will be adding more to this guide so it will be continually updated with new links.

Meanwhile, here is Medium’s own guide to boosting:
