My Secret To Sustain Life’s On-Going Challenges

May the Force be with us!

I met a friend this afternoon, life size R2D2. Photo provided by the author.

Today is Waitangi Day (National Day) in New Zealand. I am happy to enjoy an extra day off.

I had a mission today though. This afternoon I was going to pick up a second-hand Star Wars toy (R2D2) from a gentleman. He is a cool guy and has nice Star Wars collection items, which I bought before.

The last time I met him was a few years ago. I brought my wife Gabrielle along and we had a great conversation together. He was warm and friendly and I liked him. He has a child with a disability and requires a lot of caring. I felt for him and hoped he had all the support he could find.

Since Gabrielle moved to a stroke rehab facility last year, when I found it hard to deal with the situation I would remind myself what that gentleman was going through. I am not alone. I need to take one day at a time.

It was 3:30 pm I knocked on his door. Here came a big smile and a firm handshake. He remembers who I am.

When I walked in I knew this was the right place. In his house, there were Star Wars and Marvel characters, signs, and other toys. It was like a theme park. I love that.

I asked him how he was and his reply was one of those that would warm your heart. He is still looking after his child with his partner’s help. His child is doing fine but needs lots of care.

I told him what happened to Gabrielle since the last time we met. He encouraged me to stay strong and don’t think and plan too much about the future, but take it one day at a time.

He then handed me over an oversized R2D2 electronic unit. It is a 15-inch beast! It is much bigger than I anticipated. He also gave me a few Star Wars items as a gift.

The 15-inch R2D2 came to life! Photo provided by the author.

We chatted a little about our passions with Star Wars and where to buy/sell collection items. It was nice to engage with a friend with similar interests.

I knew he would be very busy between work and looking after his child but I invited him to consider coming to my place for a coffee.

I said goodbye to him before going to visit Gabrielle.

I know my friend may appear calm but looking after a highly dependent child is not easy. Whenever I struggle with Gabrielle’s health, I remind myself of this gentleman.

May the Force be with us!
