My Second Teddy Bear

September Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Comfort”

Knows my secrets, still loves me

So that’s my teddy bear, christened Chaturbhuj, fondly known as Chatz. My friend gifted him to me for my birthday in September 1995 and he has been a part of our family ever since. He’s wearing my office tie just to remind me what a hotshot I used to be and how cool I looked in a suit. Yeah, basically, as the only woman salesperson on the team, they were stymied over what to give me, because the tradition was a tie.

Later, Chatz wore my son’s saggy briefs because — he’s decent like that. He used to wear a cute Mr. Noddy vest but grew out of it.

He’s the coziest teddy ever and I have happy memories of catching my mom talking to him, my son leaning on him and dozing off and me clutching him when alone at home and somehow not feeling alone at all.

For the longest time, I yearned for a teddy bear. Our family didn’t believe in spending money on soft toys. Sure I made several but never really had one of my own until my friend gifted Chatz to me when I turned 32.

Why Chaturbhuj? Just wanted to be funny and then realized it is another moniker of Lord Vishnu. Of course, we lovingly refer to him as Chatz.

What I truly love is how Chatz looks as if his eyes are following you — and he has the kindest eyes ever. He now sits in a chair in the study and I still secretly talk to him. I love that he always understands and never talks back. It’s National Teddy Bear Day today, did you know? How are you celebrating?
