My PRIDE Feels Like THIS
A Prism & Pen writing prompt

Pride is public!
June is Pride month, and this year in the U.S. the public Pride stage has been rocked by protest, violence, and even attempted terrorism. Four Pride-decorated houses in a Baltimore gayborhood were set on fire last week. Much of the public face of Pride has always been about coming together to resist oppression, to demonstrate strength in the collective numbers, including strong numbers of cis/straight allies. Cleary, at least in the US this year, a minority of hard-core haters are trying to damage the public face of Pride.
At Prism & Pen, we’ve been writing about that all month, including by celebrating positive stories about how the haters aren’t winning.
Pride is also private!
Pride isn’t just about going to a parade or a festival. Pride is a FEELING. Pride is resistance, internal resistance to imposed shame. Pride is joyful affirmation of self and family, including created family. When two queer people meet in June and greet each other with “Happy Pride,” deep meaning often resonates between us in ways words are inadequate to express. But we feel it anyway! Our smiles radiate it.
My PRIDE Feels Like THIS
That’s our Prism & Pen writing prompt for the next two weeks. I initially wrote, “My Pride looks like this,” wanting people to share their own private Pride experiences, traditions, and joys. And I still want that. But I don’t think “look” works quite right. Pride is a feeling, after all, so what does your private Pride FEEL like? Is it different this year from other years? Have you developed traditions with friends and family? Do you throw an annual party? Do you host a small dinner? Do you watch special movies or read certain books?
What am I missing?
Let’s tell some stories, fam.
June is winding down, but Pride lasts all year. Let’s write about what Pride feels like to YOU!
Quills out, editorial support available
If you don’t think of yourself as a writer, don’t let that stop you. P&P editors can work with you to make your writing look sharp and professional. So don’t let lack of experience stop you from sharing your private Pride.
You tell your stories, we’ll help you share them.
Please send in your essays, poems, short fiction, memoir, art reviews, or history. If you’re already working on something else, we welcome submissions about anything within our guidelines at any time.
If you’ve not yet written for P&P, here are our submissions guidelines and procedures:
