My Not So Secret Crush on Kelly Clarkson and Her Kellyoke Covers

It’s my new way to start the day and it’s so good

Scrolling through my Facebook feed today, I stopped for a Rolling Stone post extolling the wonder of Kelly Clarkson performing Billy Joel’s “My Life”.

This is one of my all time favorite songs so I clicked through to watch it and wasn’t disappointed.

And that’s when I fell hard for Kelly’s brand of karaoke — the Kellyoke. It’s a 2 minute segment at the beginning of her afternoon talk show where she performs with her in-house musicians, My Band Y’all. It’s Brilliant.

So of course I had to binge more of the other popular songs she’s covered over the years on her show. They range the gamut from Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettableto Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever.

Kelly brings her own special magic to all of them. She just slays and shows again why she was the first winner of American Idol and how she just keeps getting better over time.

My mom, Bunny, had an amazing voice and I loved to listen to her sing. She liked to sing songs from the 1930s through the 1960's and Broadway musicals. But she loved all different types of music and bought me my first Beatles single when I was 12. She was also a huge American Idol Fan.

So I appreciate a versatile singer like Kelly Clarkson and I love that she’s put her talent front and center on her show as the opening act with her Kellyokes.

Here’s her cover of My Life — watch for the well-timed wink.

And a duet with Zachary Levi of the Frank and Nancy Sinatra’s “Something Stupid”.

Key Message: So I’m going to keep listening to Kelly to kick my day off right. There’s no better way to be reminded that life is good and listening to a song sung well makes it so much better.
