My Mother’s Teen Pregnancy Advice Was The Best Deterrent To Teen Pregnancy
And she meant every word.
The day my mother gave us “the talk”, is imprinted in my mind. I knew something was up when I espied my parents whispering furiously by the door of the sitting room where I and my siblings were playing around.
It seemed like my mother was trying to get my father to come in with her but my father said something like, ‘it is a woman’s job’. I cannot be sure this is accurate right now but it struck me as odd — my father was not one to shy away from anything.
Whatever this was, was serious.
I observed as my mother walked in head bowed and she sat down. Then she asked us to be seated. Looking back now, she was like one about to break the news that our favorite aunt was dead, the world was coming to an end and we were all doomed.
Well, it was only the talk. You know — sex or rather, no sex and what to do if sex and children happened.
Bottomline of this talk to her teen children:
If you get pregnant, don’t you dare abort it. The Lord will not forgive you. Don’t even ever tell me so that the Lord does not punish me with you. If you get pregnant, come home and have the baby. I will take care of it and you can continue with your life. I am not getting younger so, having a grandchild will not be bad.

The condom use talk went to my brothers. The girls got the abstinence talk and generally, we got the if you get pregnant or impregnate anyone, bring the baby home talk.
Good one Mom. All teenagers must be lining up to take you up on this offer!
For me, my mother had ensured that I will never give her a grandchild ever! (Well, not ever now. I have a daughter). But for teenage me, I swore that my mother was not getting any baby from me. My mother’s baby fever was renowned. For a woman who has six children, you will think she could not stand another baby. Nahhh. She wanted babies. She wanted them in droves. Teenage me wanted nothing to do with babies.
So, knowing my mother wanted kids, I was determined, she wouldn’t have one from me.
I must not have been the only one who made that resolve that day — neither I nor my siblings were teen parents.
