My Kids Now Learn From Home

Thriving against the odds

There is no going back for me. I am not taking my kids back to in-person school. My first reason is selfish: traffic. I hate it. My second reason is fair: I am scared for their lives because of the mass shootings. My third and final reason is, they are thriving, in spite of the odds.

I am not the best teacher, so I don’t help them much. They follow an online curriculum approved and paid for by the government — the so-called “online public school option.” It is self-paced enough that it requires minimal supervision or assistance from me.

But the best is, they can spend more time on the lessons they like. They can get stronger at what they are good at, investing time in whichever talent they will be able to monetize as adults. If they fall short on a subject, I supplement their lessons with online tutors. If anyone is in a bad mood, we take a day off and go to the beach.

I get to work from home — I don’t make much but I don’t have to constantly worry about gas, traffic, different schedules, and horrible bosses. The only issue I have to deal with is my husband thinking I should get better at housekeeping. That’s nothing compared to being called in the middle of my work day to pick up a kid because of lice, a bruise, or misbehaving.
