My Journey on Medium So Far

Sharing my thoughts with you

Photo by Matt Duncan on Unsplash

I had been on Medium for around five months. I enjoyed writing, although looking at the money I earned is disheartening. So, I will persevere like many of you who are ahead of me.

My day job as an Insurance Adviser pays much more than writing on Medium. So I began to question myself on why I wanted to try writing at all.

It may be the following that interest me:

1. Love for writing

2. Wanting to find another side hustle

3. Creating an extra stream of income

I have been telling myself nothing ventured, nothing gained. Simply put, it is like saying that if you never try, you will never know.

After all, any entrepreneur will need a period to find something profitable. When we see someone successful in their business, they did not come to their current state of success overnight.

They probably had tried many things before and finally found one profitable idea that worked. You and I would admire them, but they could have given up long ago if you knew what they had tried before their success.

My appreciation to writers who share

I want to thank all the writers who share their income stories. Those stories give me some perspective on what I can expect for another five months.

Probably I would not gain much monetarily. The truth is that we need readers, lots of them from the Medium community. Hence we must not be fooled by gaining more followers by the “I follow you, you follow me” method.

In the longer term, if many follow you, but none are reading your articles, you will fail. Let’s get real on this.

What I plan to do

I understand that I need to:

1. Write regularly

To write regularly, I would interpret that as a daily chore to write, if possible. Some Publications prefer short articles of 150 words. Hence you can submit your articles to them if you have a busy day with less writing time.

After all, writing less than 150 words should be simple, right? Maybe, as long as you have an idea of what to write.

2. Write longer articles

Writing a more extended article may take longer, but it is still possible if you have some interesting topic ideas. Most of us can write as long as we know what to write. But sometimes, our minds go blank when we want to write.

Some days we can be tired from our day job, making it difficult to start writing. If I cannot complete a longer article in one day, I intend to take two days to do it.

It is worth the effort.

3. Niche the writing to a particular segment of readers

Having a niche has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, some writers are good at nutrition or a specific sport. If they write on those topics all the time, it may attract a strong following if their subject is what people are looking for.

Otherwise, it may be boring to a particular group of readers who are not resonating with their topics.

Whether it is niched or diversified, the more critical concern is whether the writings are authentic.

You must share from your heart. You must share part of your life with your audience, and they can sense your sincerity from the first paragraph.

Nobody likes to read an article as if generated by Google or ChatGPT. It does not add much value to our lives.

Final thoughts before I close

Writing from our hearts is needed to gain a loyal group of followers who looks forward to your sharing. Your style of writing is what they would enjoy most.

I will keep writing and not look at my income for at least one year. I forgot to tell you that I enjoy the many writers I follow. They knew that, too, because I would add some comments to interact with them.

Thanks for reading, and I hope we will all have a promising future as we pursue the love of writing.
