My husband had to leave us after Valentine’s Day

The ocean called him back to its waves

This year, we didn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. Once again, the whole family, including myself, got sick — how many times has it been this cold season? I’ve lost track of it.

While the children seem to recover more easily from the illness, it’s physically and mentally draining for me.

However, that wasn’t the only reason these days have been filled with sadness. The day after Valentine’s Day, my husband left. Therefore it was a very tough, emotionally charged, and sad day. Despite being accustomed to his departures after so many years together, it never becomes easier. And my daughter’s pain over the separation only adds to the emotional weight.

The life of a sailor isn’t suited for everyone. Yet, my husband possesses the strongest character I’ve ever known. Nevertheless, we don’t have the same resilience as he does. Once again, I tearfully watched him close the door behind him. How long will it be this time? Will it be 4 months, 6 months? It all depends on the contract.

As a captain on cargo ships, my husband’s profession demands extensive periods away from home and family, requiring him to spend numerous months each year navigating the seas. This necessary distance, part of his profession, leads to a substantial emotional and physical gap, deeply affecting both him and our family.

So on February 14th, we had to cancel our restaurant reservation because of the flu. Instead, nestled in the warmth of our home, adorned with flickering candles and the sweet scent of romance, we celebrated our love in the quietude of our sanctuary. Yes, sipping champagne and cherishing each other’s company was the best way of saying goodbye once again.

Furthermore, the idea that the reunion is the most cherished moment, an eagerly anticipated event, fills our hearts with warmth and motivates us to take one day at a time.

Forever and always, you are my love, my anchor, my everything!
