Summary

The article discusses the author's pride in his girlfriend's career as an arm wrestler, a sport where participants are colloquially known as "hookers," and provides historical context for the term.

Abstract

The author shares his acceptance and pride in his girlfriend's profession as an arm wrestler, a sport where the term "hooker" originates from the arm wrestling technique rather than the more common association with prostitution. His girlfriend, once known as Tiny and now as Granny Becky, has been involved in the sport since high school and has achieved significant success, including being ranked second in the state at her peak. The article also delves into the historical origins of the term "hooker," tracing it back to the American Civil War and General Joseph Hooker, whose army's camp followers, including sex workers, were colloquially referred to as "Hooker's Girls." However, the author notes that the term was in print before General Hooker's time, suggesting that he may have popularized rather than originated the term. The girlfriend's current role includes coaching and serving as an ambassador for the sport.

My Girlfriend Is A Hooker; She Loves Doing It

I’m okay with it, and I’ll tell you why.

Introduction

My girlfriend is a hooker. There’s no denying it. She unabashedly tells me all about it. I’m okay with it because I know it brings her great pleasure. She hooks every weekend. She not only hooks locally, but she also travels to hook.

How did she start hooking? She started hooking in high school. She was a competitive athlete in the sports of discus and baseball. She also was a wrestler. Tiny found that competition with the girls was okay, but playing with boys was better. Especially wrestling, the closeness, the touching, and the feel of bodies close together.

She was sixteen when she first hooked up with a man. He was twenty-six and married. That was her beginning from which she never looked back.

The reveal

In her young adulthood, she was a star hooker. At her peak, she was ranked second in the state. She was a beast, virtually unbeatable among women.

You may be wondering why I am so proud of her. In the usual vocabulary of English, hookers aren’t given such respect.

You must be thinking that she is a prostitute, an escort, or a streetwalker. Heavens no. She’s an arm wrestler. An arm wrestler is also called a hooker, albeit with a bit of a grin.

These days, she still arm wrestles, though primarily she coaches younger women and some men. Her regional association sends her to meets as a hooker ambassador across the state. In her mid-sixties, her nickname is no longer Tiny; it is Granny Becky.

How prostitutes became known as hookers

My favorite explanation of how prostitutes became hookers involves the American Civil War general Joseph Hooker. Mobile armies have always attracted entrepreneurs known as camp followers. These businesspersons would provide various services to the soldiers. Army personnel needed laundry services, gunsmiths, and sex workers. After all, fighting a war a long way from home can be a lonely business.

The Army of the Potomac, led by General Joseph “Fighting Joe” Hooker, was no different. Historically Gen. Hooker’s army had a rather wild reputation for hard-drinking, gambling, and womanizing. The prostitutes that followed the army were known as Hooker’s Girls, later shortened to Hookers.

That’s a great story, isn’t it? Too bad it may only be partially true. General Hooker may have advanced the nickname for prostitutes, but he is not the origin. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, hooker in print was observed in 1845 and 1859.

So now you know why I am so proud of my girlfriend, the hooker.
