MONTHLY CHALLENGE
My first (and only) 4th of July
Celebrations, festivals — I avoid them! Why?

I hate crowds!
But I couldn’t avoid this one. I was trapped — and I loved it!
This particular holiday provided lots of firsts.
Well, obviously it wasn’t my only 4th July. I’ve had 72 of those but it was my first 4th of July Independence Day celebration. Where was I? The United States of America? Actually no. It’s a territory of the US — a military base in the Western Pacific Ocean. Guessed it? Yes, it’s Guam. How many of you have celebrated the 4th of July in Guam? Actually how many of you have been to Guam? If you’re in the US Navy or Air Force, you may have been stationed here.

Thirty years ago we tagged along on a week-long Kreepy Krauly conference at Pacific Island Club in Guam. (PIC). It was a high-class island resort. It was my first (but not my last) time staying at an all-inclusive resort. It was my first(and last) time trying scuba, and consequently my first time snorkelling, but definitely not the last. It was my first (but not my last) time riding in a convertible. What is it about convertibles? I love them!
The cock fight
It was the first (and last) time I attended a cock — with real roosters — fight. It was disgusting. Cockfights are illegal so it was all very hush-hush. It was not a pleasant experience. I spent a large part of the night slinking outside the ring.
Tripping in the disco
It was my first time falling over drunk — actually, my heel got caught in a gap in the planks of the steps in the disco named Rum Jungle from memory — and really hurt myself. My right knee has never been the same since, but fortunately I was too inebriated to feel the pain.
I was coming back to my seat after singing karaoke 9 to 5 (Sheena Easton) with my girlfriend. We were still bathing in the glory (everyone was clapping and woohooing) when I fell. People rushed to pick me up, but not my husband. He laughed saying “she falls over all the time” which I do so he wasn’t lying. If my shoe had come completely off my foot, it wouldn’t have been such a bad fall, but my foot stayed twisted and trapped and my right knee took the full brunt.
It wasn’t until the following day that I felt the pain! Oh, the pain! No amount of ice helped! And not even more copious quantities of alcohol! But I have completely gotten off track.
Independence Day Celebrations
The 4th of July was celebrated a few days before my fall from grace and I was all for celebrating with Miller’s beer in cans while playing outdoor games. Running across pretend lily pads in the pool didn’t win me a prize but somehow the tug-of-war did. The first and last time I’d ever played this game. I’m resting on my laurels. ( A Pacific Island Club medal on a shell necklace) I actually found it in less than 5 seconds — how good is that!

I don’t remember there being fireworks but maybe by nightfall, I had imbibed a little too much or maybe I was asleep. I don’t remember much else about the day to be honest!
Here is Crystal A. Walker’s challenge.
