Summary

A writer shares their experiment with self-publishing on Medium, contrasting the engagement and views received from self-published articles versus those published in Medium's publications.

Abstract

The author of the web content has been actively publishing on Medium, primarily within publications. However, inspired by other successful self-publishing writers like Yana Bostongirl and Sara Burdick, the author decided to conduct an experiment with self-publishing. The results were surprising, with self-published articles garnering significantly more views and engagement than those published through Medium's publications. The author provides specific examples of self-published articles that outperformed traditionally published ones, emphasizing the potential benefits of self-publishing for new writers who may struggle to find suitable publications. Despite the success of self-publishing, the author plans to continue experimenting by publishing one self-published story per week while maintaining publication submissions. The author also promotes the work of fellow writers and the new Reciprocal publication, encouraging community support and collaboration among Medium writers.

My Experiment With Self Publishing On Medium

The results are shocking!

Since I have started publishing on Medium I almost published every article in the publication. I am a big fan of publications. Recently I read a wonderful article written by Yana Bostongirl about self-publishing. Recently many Medium publications closed their doors. Self-publishing is becoming popular on Medium.

Another writer recently joined Medium. She is reaching new milestones every day by self-publishing. Sara Burdick is becoming a very famous writer on Medium. Almost every story of her is self-published.

Therefore, I decided to make an experiment with self-publishing. As I have three publications on Medium, I almost don’t have much time to publish in other pubs. Still, I try to publish in new publications.

I started self-publishing the last one. I have noticed some big changes in my views and earnings. I have self-published some of my articles which received more engagement than an article that I have published in publications.

Whenever I published an article in a publication I nearly got 50 to 60 views. On the other side, I have received 100 or even more than 100 views by self-publishing.

Here you can see the difference.

The very first story I self-published was this one.

Here, you can see the stats of the story.

I nearly received 200 views of which 187 are internal. I am still getting vies every day for this post.

Here is another post I recently self-published which received a very good engagement with readers.

I have recently started more self-publishing articles that are getting read by new readers of Medium.

So, if you are thinking what are my plans about publishing on Medium.

Should I stop publishing in publications?

My answer is No. I will keep doing this experiment by publishing a self-published story every week.

My advice to all the new writers who joined Medium recently, if you are unable to find the perfect publication for your work. It’s okay. You will have a chance to get more readers just by self-publishing your article.

No publications will guarantee you more views and earnings. It’s better to self-published your article than wait for a week to publish your articles in a big pub.

Today, I want to share the work of Danielle Hestand for writing a post dedicated to Reciprocal publication. I am grateful Danielle for your support in creating a supportive community. I appreciate all your efforts.

I would also like to promote the work of a new writer Divya Goswami who recently joined Medium and became a part of this community. Here, you can find her beautiful poem. Do connect with her and support her.

A beautiful tale in the form of a poem written by J.R. Sonder
