My Dog Goes Lunar During a Full Moon
Is this normal?

My black lab Bear goes bonkers when there is a full moon. He runs in circles, hyperventilates, barks at the vacuum cleaner, and runs into closed doors. He’s a hot mess. He also can’t be trusted. He never could be trusted, which is why he is on a 40 mg dose of Prozac.
When there is a full moon, the Prozac doesn’t work-hence his lunacy.
Luna is the Latin name for Moon, and from Luna, we get the derivative adjectives like lunatic and lunacy — like my dog right now. A lunatic in a mad state of howling lunacy.
A study out of Colorado State University Veterinary Medical Center suggests that cats also go a bit lunar during a Full Moon and are 23 percent more prone to visit the Pet Hospital than dogs at 28%.
It’s not just cats and dogs. According to National Geographic, there is a lunar connection to aberrant behavior in other creatures as well — birds crash into windows, oysters close up, rattlesnakes slither out of their burrows, badgers forget to mark their territory, and scorpions glow in the dark.
I’m not a scientist; I can only speak about my dog, Bear, and how he has snapped during this Full Moon. Here’s what else he’s gotten into. Let me know if you think it’s normal.
- He bit the gardener.
- He humped the Amazon package.
- He got into the trash and ate the coffee grounds.
- He somehow jumped onto the counter and snatched and tore up the paper towels spreading them from the kitchen to the dining room.
- He got pissed off at the apple tree and growled at it for several minutes.
All strange behavior. We now know to up his Prozac to 60 mg on these days.
