My Dear Young Authors, Don’t Ask Google About Genres

If you wanna become a successful author then you need to find YOUR GENRE all by yourself.

I still remember that when I started out, I really didn’t have much knowledge about Genres.

I knew there were Romance, Crime, Horror, Paranormal, Religious, and Thriller. But I didn’t have any idea which one to choose. I started with horror and then picked up thriller. I watched numerous videos and read articles and even asked google but that was consuming a lot of my time without giving me a proper answer.

If you have just started out then maybe you are on this path. Maybe you have Googled something like “Best Selling Genres To Write in” and so on. Read further, and tell me if it has worked for you.

The ONLY Practical Way To Find Your Genre

I won’t write this in a form of theory because I know how much everyone hates it, including me.

I’ll list it down and even bold it out in case you are in hurry.

  1. Avoid reading books during this process. Because we choose books which has either a good image or the author has become extremely successful. (more at last)
  2. Pick TWO genres and write a short story in both of them. Why TWO? Because I know you don’t like to be pigeon-holed. If I say one, then you’ll be miserable afterward.
  3. During this experiment, Don’t follow any HOW-TO guides because that will block your natural capability to tell stories. No one ever knew what kind of story will be liked by readers. No one ever has and no one ever will.
  4. Do this thing either everyone has gone sleep or early morning. This leads to an easy flow of writing, without any hindrance.
  5. If you wanna listen to music related to the genre, do it. It used to help me before to come up with beautiful scenes.
  6. Avoid TV or Movies or Books. Because you’ll try to copy them, instead of having your own voice.

If You Think You Have No Talent, Then You Are Yet To Find Your Genre.

Never Forget That …

  1. Picking One genre helps you to accelerate your career.
  2. You can always change it once you start earning money. No rules. You are completely free.
  3. Every author has at least one genre in which he/she is the best.
  4. Authors are REALLY known by their genre.

There are many ways to find our genre. I would like to know if you have a genre that you liked the most.

Fiction or Non-fiction, all are welcome.

I hope you won’t ask which genre to choose from, now on and be your own guru.

Remember, only you can decide which genre to choose. You and only you.
