My Cat is a Super Spy. Is Yours?
Be careful: your cat knows all your secrets.
My cat Anya is a superhero. Or a super spy. I’m not sure which.
That is the only explanation. Here are the clues:
Anya bounds into a room like The Flash.
She quickly jumps onto the bed or couch and takes the pounce position. Darting her eyes around, she takes in everything.
Anya uses my laptop to send coded messages.
Often as I sit at my laptop in the family room, tapping away, Anya stares. She then steps from the arm of the couch, putting one paw onto the arm of my chair. When there are no sudden movements, she will step onto my lap.
At that point she will butt her head into my hand, distracting me from my computer. As I pet her head, she purrs. As I settle into the petting motion, BOOM!
She jumps up and puts her front paws on my keyboard, typing coded messages. The cursor flies around the screen. The Word document disappears and the browser window appears.
Anya keeps tabs on the humans in our house: visitors and residents alike.
Anya often sits atop a cabinet in my craft room. Unless you look up and stand back a little, she is hard to see. (Our son doesn’t have this problem. At 6’3”, sneaky cats have to work harder to spy on him.)
Of course, she could be taking time out for a little self-care. Who doesn’t need alone time? However, Anya could also be lurking up there to keep track of her human’s comings and goings.
That room looks out onto the front entryway. Anyone walking into the house is visible. Anyone using the hallway to go anywhere in the house is visible from the top of the tall IKEA cabinet.
Anya may have optical implants.
She seems to see things we don’t see. My husband suggested she sees into another dimension. Her eyes will follow some small something invisible to the rest of us.
Xander doesn’t seem to see what she sees. We have been putting this down to her amazing hunter reflexes. What if that is just what she wants us to think?
She may have infrared optical implants or something. There may be messages in the air or next to the wall we mere humans can’t see.
Anya is on high alert, sensitive to any change in vocal tones or movement.
When our Ring doorbell goes off, she is on the alert. She dashes to the entryway and conceals herself in a hidden position under the dining room table. From this spot, she can see the front door.
Her actions depend on what happens next. If it is a delivery or a question at the door, she stays where she is. If someone actually enters the house, she again dashes like The Flash.
Off she runs to our bedroom or over to the craft room and atop the cabinet. Later she may come out. She is lured out of hiding by quiet talking.
She will walk into the room and position herself with care. From the position she chooses, she can observe and listen to everything.
Is Xander her partner in the spy trade?
If so, Xander’s cover is solid. No one would suspect a thing. He generally wanders over to say hello to visitors.
This COULD be an excellent cover. His fur gets into everything. There could be tiny trackers or listening devices on those strands.
Xander could be tracking anyone who comes into this house. He may always know where I am. Where my husband is.
I found fur in my suitcase when I unpacked on vacation. He could have been tracking me all over Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago.
When I returned from the trip, I did laundry and repacked. My husband and I then spent a week in Estes Park, Colorado. What greeted me as I unpacked in the cabin? You guessed it: Xander’s white fur.
I have convinced myself. Our cats are superspies. That’s the only explanation. That superhero stuff was a red herring.
