My Baptism Of Fire

Otherwise known as early days of working as an editor for Illumination

I am writing this in response to Dew Langrial’s wonderful post where she beautifully wrote about her virgin experience, her DAY ONE of being an editor at Illumination, and challenged us all to share our personal stories.

Just to set the record straight, I began editing on the same week we moved house. I don’t really know which demanded more courage, the need to appear competent on Illumination, or gaining relative order amongst my personal chaos.

And even if my fellow editors don’t believe this, Illumination won over! The rookie needed practice! Were eyes raised heavenly in response to my efforts? I suppose I will never know, but the urge to behave as competent was ever there!

Because of that, even today boxes still line the shelves of our garage, the temptation always hovering, to choose a simplistic route and simply re-load them into the boot of the car, reverse into the local tip, and leave all as a gift for foragers.

Right now the unopened boxes serve as a dark reminder of how far I need to go to be truly minimalist.

But back to those electrifying days as an editor. If only I could even find enough courage to even venture there in my mind. I can’t. All I recall is that I was petrified.

It’s one thing to spend many teaching years marking students’ work, (and explaining the corrections), because that stays between a small group of people, you, the students, parents, (if they look), and the executive, (also if they look).

But in editing here on Illumination, so many others are reading your penny’s worth, your suggestions, and you lose a bit of natural bravado and belief in yourself.

This new exposure seemed to be so much bigger.

The first thing I did was to ensure that I fully understood the task in hand. To that end I researched the word EDITOR: a person who is in charge of and determines the final content of a newspaper, magazine, or multi-author book.

Does that cover ILLUMINATION?

  • a newspaper
  • a magazine
  • a multi-author book

Surely ILLUMINATION is all of these, plus more. What about adding, a guide on the side, a reassuring mentor, a place to share, to learn, and to give?

Having realized, that being an editor right here, is a pretty big responsibility, I calmed my inner being, hoping that my insecurities would be visible only to my naked soul.

So, I hid behind all the issues I was unsure of, and edited others’ work like a classroom teacher. I’m pretty sure it was Holly Kellums (and if not, let me apologize here!), who suggested to me that I just operated a little differently, compared to others. I wasn’t sure what to make of that. Didn’t everybody ask their writers to:

  • read their work aloud and feel the punctuation
  • explain the reasons as to why something wasn’t a sentence
  • think about using Oxford Commas for clarity
  • try to explain what an Oxford comma really is Aldric Chen
  • make sure their verbs agreed with the subject
  • move the order of paragraphs

I knew that Dr Mehmet Yildiz, and all editors, are privy to everything that we editors write, all those ‘private’ little notes, and rumor hath it that he in particular has 48 hours(extendable)in each and every day. Still we all have our saturation point, and as long as his awoke times didn’t marry with mine, all would be well.

Still there are people who suffered through my dependency, and some still do, one being Liam Ireland.

Oh the poor blighter. I always prefaced my contacting him by apologizing for posing yet another dumb question, and his response was always that it wasn’t dumb, or he didn’t really know if it was dumb because…Thank you Liam. If I ever get to Japan I will be carrying one of Australia’s finest reds, in my hand-luggage, just for you.

And then there was dealing with the super-enthusiastic writers who simultaneously were trying to fix up their errors as I was proofreading the rest of their work, and I’d get the system message…a failure to save because somebody else was editing simultaneously. I was confused at first, but soon learned to leave things be for a time, and return when the coast was clear, Aldric Chen!

So many moments of self-doubt, the main one being when I realized I hadn’t checked for image sources and I’d have to go back to the now-published article and send a message…and as you might have guessed, a couple of these were not sent privately, (rookie editing at play.!).

Thank you Dew Langrial, for assuring me I am not the only one to have done so. ‘A new writer submitted a draft for review. I read the story, corrected some spellings, and checked it for plagiarism. It was okay, and then I hit the ‘Publish’ button. I didn’t notice the image sources. There were seven images in the story — and the writer had not provided the source of any of the images.’
