My Almost Daily Journal-March Winter Storm Creates a Great Day for Bird Photos
Volume 27-Tag Along With Me on My Sometimes Boring Sometimes Interesting Sometimes Humorous Journey Through Life

Are you ready for the time change to Daylight Savings? Although it may disrupt our sleep patterns (especially children), the extra hour of daylight will be welcomed. Finally more daylight to work outside a little later. Today here in Central NY we received at least 8 inches of snow and strong winds. This coming week it’s supposed to warm up so the snow will be probably gone by week’s end. The storm today brought out the birds in force and provided a great backdrop for some photos.

As I wrote in my previous story, the weather has been a rollercoaster ride the past few weeks. This week we had 2 snowstorms with Spring-like weather in between. On the nice days, I spent most of the time cutting up a pine tree that snapped off the other night when a cold front came through with strong winds. However, the weather awakened my interested in doing yard and garden work. March brings a glimmer of hope here and there in between cold snaps. Soon, however, it will be more consistently warm as Spring arrives on the 20th.
Watch For Migrating Birds
This time of year birdwatching becomes even more interesting as Spring approaches. I have already begun to see Spring birds arriving including Red-Winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles, and Robins. I saw the first Robins here last Sunday the 6th as the temperatures were near 70 and the snow had melted. Today, the Robins looked out of place as they huddled in our lilac bush during the snowstorm. Perhaps they arrived a week or two early.

Along with the Spring birds arriving that stay all Summer, it is even more interesting to see migrating birds. Today I saw a Song Sparrow, which we don’t have all Winter and I normally don’t see in the Summer. It apparently is migrating North to Canada for the Summer.
Hopefully over the next few months more migrating birds will appear at the feeder. Something to look forward to. Stay tuned.
