Music, Musical and Film Recommendations From Fellow Writers I’ve Read This Week
Writers on Medium are not just writers. We’re more than that as creatives. I’m sure most of us love consuming media too, from music, musicals, movies, and more.
Here are just some of the recommendations injected with personal stories of these writers that I’ve read this week.
Music and Film: Hridayam
This piece features an Indian song from an Indian movie, Hridayam.
I love that Sandra opened up the article with a ‘what if’ prompt. This is something I think about a lot. Many little ‘what if’ moments has led me to where I am today, and that would not have been possible had many of those outcomes been different.
Sandra describes her thought process as and after watching the film. I love this piece of quotes included in her article, as someone who loves revisiting old memories (and rewatching old shows):
“Why do you often fly away to places beyond reach? Why do you stream these memories through me over and over again?”
Perhaps, such revisiting memories are a reminder of what made you who you are, today…..
Music: Transitioning from loving punk rock to chill hop
RJ Reyes in his article described his journey with music. From the first time he was introduced to music, to how his taste in music evolved over time. I think that’s a really interesting take for this challenge, and I love how he included many personal stories to introduce each variety of genres and songs featured in his article, along with the injection of humour within.
The songs and pieces mentioned in this article are worth a playlist on their own!
His feature of a Green Day song reminded me of 21 Guns, the first Green Day song I knew years ago. In the mood to listen to my rock playlist now…
My favourite snippet from his article is:
However, I once judged a friend for liking emo music. But it turns out that his reasons for liking it have less to do with what’s going on in his life but more about the mix, flow, tempo or tune of the music. And he is right: Why can’t you like music simply because you just like it?
Cause, why not?
Musical: Grace and Law in Les Miserables
This exciting piece, as the title suggests, is based on the musical Les Miserables. The piece describes the plot, and linked it to Christianity, whether as pictured within the musical, or just the thought process by Paul Walker.
I particularly found this extract of the article really true:
If you defended someone who robbed you, he might rob someone else. Because, as Javert believes, “a man like that can never change.”
If you tried to argue that allowing a thief to take your belongings without penalty would convince him of crime and result in a change of heart, they would likely laugh you out of the room.
It’s the same for most people, good or bad, typically bad. Back to the old saying, a leopard never changes its spots.
Rom-Com: You’ve Got Mail
Emma S. starts the article off with the introduction of her answer to the question ‘what is your favorite movie?’. Emma then talked about her love for ‘You’ve Got Mail’, her rom-com movie.
Linking the movie to nostalgia and how it relates to her life as she knows it growing up, it’s very wholesome to me. Revisiting old memories as a kid, and seeing them in the movies you love. I love that feeling too whenever I watch a movie.
I’m not too young to remember this:
But it can be nostalgic for others. Do you remember AOL? Remember when chat rooms and email all came in? Well, this movie embraces that time in history as well. Taking you back to a time when all this digital stuff was exciting and new, plus some dreaded connectivity issues.
I miss times back then when I would send random MSN messages to my cousins, drawing nonsense in most of them.
