You’ve Got Mail
In Response to CC4: It’s nostalgia for me baby

When going on dates and getting to know anyone a typical question you may be familiar with is “what is your favorite movie?”
It is a very simple and quick answer for me and always will be “You’ve Got Mail.” Sure, it has the infamous on-screen couple Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan (before some facial fun) and it is classified in the rom-com genre.
Which, let’s be real, is just a good feel and probably classic for me being a woman. So my dates are never surprised when I say it is a rom-com as 90% of them have never heard of this movie.
But it is so much more for me.
See, I have grown up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan my whole life. 29 years to be exact when this is being written. I have seen it evolve and change. You’ve Got Mail revolves right around where I grew up. The Starbucks actually in the video only JUST shut its doors on Feb 21st, 2022.
There is something so heartwarming to see many of the old stores I frequented as a child. The fresh bagels you could get at H&H all the way into the late evening. Even the lines from the actors hit a string.
But it can be nostalgic for others. Do you remember AOL? Remember when chat rooms and email all came in? Well, this movie embraces that time in history as well. Taking you back to a time when all this digital stuff was exciting and new, plus some dreaded connectivity issues.
It almost feels more relevant to today’s dating than it did back then. Both found each other online and found themselves in relationships that didn’t really work just to be in a relationship. In 2020, about 45.4% of Americans aged 18 and over, or 114.3 million, were unmarried according to the Current Population Survey. Online dating has also been on the rise and took a spike when the pandemic hit. More people are dating later in life as well, which these two are in their story. Bringing in overall good feels, hopefulness, and relevant content even in 2022.
Have you seen You’ve Got Mail? What nostalgic movie do you always watch?
