And bracing for the fall.

After the last week of rain, one of the hottest summers ever recorded in Europe is coming to an end.

As the fall begins, with the ground moist and the last shrub flowers making the air fresh and fragrant, mushrooms pop up. And the first ones are those that come out of dead wood deep inside the forest.

Let’s go into the still-green forest and chase some…

Going into the forest.

We quickly find some, because all the dead branches, logs and tree trunks are humid, the air is still temperate, and the leaves of the trees still protect the lower heights from the Sun.

These mushrooms grow in small colonies. They look to me like steps, sometimes lateral, sometimes vertical. I can almost imagine a small human-like creature, perhaps a gnome, climbing them up or walking them as in a Via ferrata.

Some make single big “steps”, and others grow multiple hats fused together:

And then there’s also the more typical mushroom, where you could find a smurf or two:
