Book Prompt

Murder and Mayhem Makes Me Happy

Finding comfort in mysteries and thrillers

I’m back once again to try to answer Marrisa’s weekly book prompt. This time she wants us to write about a book that makes us happy or a “comfort” character from a book.

I don’t re-read books, so I don’t have one particular book I read that makes me happy. I do have authors who make me happy. People who make me laugh like Christopher Moore, Jenny Lawson, and Drew Magary. I have their books on my shelves at home, but I don’t pull them out to read them when I am seeking happiness.

So, I will try to answer the second question. My answer for this one is as odd as most of my answers.

The characters who give me comfort are not your typical “comfort” characters. What gives me comfort is reading the next installment of the mystery/thriller series I read. Click the link below for my favorites.

I don’t get comfort from happy books. I get comfort from reading about Lucas Davenport tracking that latest killer in Minnesota. I get comfort from Harry Bosch tracking the clues in an LA cold case. I get comfort in the banter between Alex Delaware and Milo Sturgis. There is murder. There may be mayhem. But, for me, there is also comfort.

There is comfort because there is familiarity. I have spent years with these characters. I’ve watched them grow older. In some cases, I’ve watched them get married and have kids. Sometimes you just want to spend time with old friends.

There is also comfort because you know what you are going to get. I’m reading a book right now based on reviews. I’m struggling to get into the book. That happens sometimes. It takes a bit to get used to the writing style and to care about the characters. I don’t have that with my “friends”. I can jump right in, ready to go.

My comfort characters are all of my old book friends who tend to visit me once a year.
