Writing funny is no easy task. It takes ten thousand years to master the craft or one good conk on the back of the amygdala — if you haven’t put in that kind of commitment, MuddyUm might be the place for you.

X Marks the Spot

What MuddyUm Is — MuddyUm is the fastest-growing comedy publication on Medium since 2019 run by a dedicated crew of volunteers. It’s a lot like herding cats. Or butterflies, according to Quartermaster Toni Crowe.

What MuddyUm Does — We make you laugh. Or try to. This publication was founded on the belief that laughter is the best medicine, or supplement, to good health. Not that our medicine has been endorsed by Doctor Oz, but we’re okay with that.

What MuddyUm Offers — A space for budding comedy writers with Editorial assistance. Volunteers take on the role of helping you write funny by providing solid advice. Working with an editor is the extra set of eyes every writer needs to improve their craft.

What We’re Looking For — Six Pull-Ups. We’re that person in the gym who cheers you on to do just one more. Cut the unfunny, tighten up the funny — and we’ll not only publish it, but we might also share it on the high seas in our Daily Muddy Funny (DMF) and newsletter. We will work with you to get your content up to our humor standards if your first draft falls short, and we ask that you commit to putting some muscle into it.

Why We Accept Work — Because it’s funny. It made us laugh. Preferably out loud. ROFLOLMEP kind of stuff.

Why We Reject Work — It’s lazy or the author is uncoachable. Yes, even on a pirate ship there are coaches to help us be funnier writers, and if someone wants to help you be funnier, you should definitely let them. You never know how funny you might become with a little help.

You may be asked to rewrite and resubmit your article for a number of reasons. Style may be one of them.

If you feel you and the editor working on your piece aren’t seeing eyepatch to eyepatch, you are welcome to request a different editor.
