Summary

K. Barrett, the author, engages in a week-long photo-a-day challenge, reflecting on the interplay between art and science in nature, and discovers an increased awareness of the natural world's intricate details.

Abstract

K. Barrett embarks on a "PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE" during the fourth week of July, capturing images that reveal the complex layers of nature's artistry. Initially, Barrett captures what seems to be simple scenes, only to later discover additional elements like animals and birds that were initially overlooked. The author draws a parallel between their experience and a quote from Leonardo da Vinci, emphasizing the importance of combining practice with science. As the week progresses, Barrett encounters unexpected natural phenomena, such as a nearby tornado and the strong scent of lilies, which heighten their senses and appreciation for the environment. The challenge culminates in a realization that nature's signals, symbols, and sensory experiences serve as a compass, guiding one to a happy place where art and science achieve balance. Barrett concludes by encouraging readers to observe nature with the curiosity of a scientist, recognizing that there is always more to see and learn.

PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

More Than Meets The Eye

Fourth Week of July

Those who devote themselves to [artistic] practice without science are like sailors who put to sea without a rudder or compass and who can never be certain where they are going — Leonardo da Vinci

Day One

I have been enjoying life by taking time to notice and note details in the art of the natural world. The first step in science is observation. This week, I realized how many layers there are in the art and science that connect us to nature.

I thought I was capturing a tree and a sunset in the cover photo I took behind my house. I then realized there was also a rabbit and a squirrel. Not until I looked at the photo did I notice there was a bird too. (The photo is not super close, but I am surprised I missed these details in the real moment.)

It happened again when I was at the park. I took a photo of the further setting sun. Then, a rabbit came into the shot. Not until I looked at the photo did I notice there was also a deer in the background.

This is not a very clear photo, but a very clear message. I am not nearly as observant as I thought I was.

Day Two

Darkness quickly surrounded my home. Little did I know that a tornado was touching down a few miles away.

My sister lives in Alabama. It is more likely for there to be a tornado in her area so she has warning signals on her phone. Tornados are very unlikely in my state. I was not expecting this. I would not have been prepared if it would have shifted a bit. What signals did I miss?

Day Three

I was greeted by the sun peeking through the curtains in my office this morning. I enjoyed the elements sparkling together, a sign of a bright new day.

Day Four

This slice of orangish-red sunset dancing in the forest brought a smile to my face. The shapes and shadows on the green groundcover and on the trunks of the trees were something special.

Day Five

My neighborhood walk was interrupted by a super-strong smell of lilies. I looked up to see how amazing these lilies were in their full blooms. I had noticed them before but I had not noted them. I had not given them the attention they deserved until this scent stopped me in my tracks for an aromatic moment of awe.

Day Six

Scrumptious treats for me to eat. Note: Nature provides.

Day Seven

In my mind, blue sea glass and blue feathers serve as symbols of happy things to come. I am looking forward to using the lessons I have received from nature as a compass, leading me to my happy place where there is a balance between art and science.

Thanks for reading. I hope everyone takes some time to observe nature’s art like a scientist, there is always more than meets the eye.

Check out these other recent stories that were also inspired by nature as art.

Thanks to Dennett for starting this PHOTO-A-DAY challenge. Also, thanks to LensAfield and others for their inspiring pictures and stories!
